Depending on what post-season analysis finds this might be the only case of two potential category 5 hurricanes coexisting in the Atlantic.

And now Maria wants to join in on the fun. This very creepy picture of the hurricane before nightfall as it's about to slam Dominica...

The Atlantic acting very WPACish this year. Now you guys know how we feel over here having Cat 5's although here it's mostly every year. It is exciting and deadly too.

1900hurricane wrote:I'm going to drop a few microwave images for this thread. The first two are from Vongfong '14 and Meranti '16. The SSMIS pass and AMSU passes from the two storms, respectively are the two highest satellite derived intensity estimates that I am aware of. These estimates are a little of high outliers, even for these intense storms, so it's unlikely they were as intense as these estimates. The SSMIS pass for Vongfong yielded 182 kt/870 mb and the AMSU pass for Meranti yielded 179 kt/892 mb.

This is a cool one. Sun rising over the gulf on August 28th, 2005, revealing a monster that was born overnight:

If i were to rely on dvorak, this would probrably be estimated at only 140 knots because dvorak finally caught up after 2 to 3 days. It's sad really.
