I believe Lee should become a major after all.

Doesn't look complete yet, still seeing the inner eyewall produce convection. The outer eye is noticeably larger.

Still 95kts, despite significant improvement from earlier--either Lee is a Cat 3 now, or it was a Cat 1 earlier. It's baffling to have the current and earlier intensity the same given the change in appearance hours ago vs now.

Raw ADT up to T5.6 (final ADT at T5.4). Will be interesting to see the 12z SAB/TAFB Dvorak classifications. Lee certainly does look like a major hurricane this morning, more so than ever before.

He went from Lee the ultimate FAIL storm, to come back to join his brethren as a major. One of the great comebacks in the Atlantic which was not even expected.

Very reminiscent of Michael in 2012.

The record is 7, which is shared between 1961 and 2005. I think we'll get one more major before the end of the season but if we can get two more we will tie the record.

1961 will likely lose one or two in reanalysis though.

Meanwhile on Facebook there are tons of sad reacts to the news of Lee's intensification. Given it is going to stay out to sea, I'm not sure what everyone is sad about.

This is literally the best outcome for everyone (the people, the planet, the storm, okay I am overdoing it on the last one  ) involved. The storm delivers its heat and moisture to the mid-latitudes without killing anyone, and we get some science done.

Gonna confess this is why I went into astrophysics instead of meteorology. I get to watch powerful forces duke it out thousands of light years away where they can't hurt anyone. Unless of course there is a civilization currently being roasted by the relativistic jet of M87.

Since Lee made it to major operationally, it wouldn't surprise me to see the post-analysis intensity bumped up to 105-110kt.
