My patio table on my back deck was covered with sleet/graupel. That rules out having my morning coffee and donut out there.

I take it back. I only looked out the front windows. After looking in the back, I guess the wind blew the front yard clear and it settled in the back. I managed to slowly trudge back there to snap a pic. It’s incredible!

I feel you. Blizzard of '18. We will rebuild.

Bottomed out at 12° with a wind chill of -2 here in Sherman.

Roofs look shiny so they are icy, but from looking outside that’s it. Haven’t ventured out yet, too cold. Unless we get something new, looks like i’ll be going into work...

Be careful if you are going south. There's probably not much traffic on the roads, so if it keeps sleeting I imagine they will eventually ice since its in the mid 20s. I may be stuck at work now, lol.

It is sleeting here now. No, I am going north, from just south of P’ville up to Round Rock. Don’t have to be in till 5pm so I will have plenty of time to decide.

What models are you looking at? Trying to learn all the different models out there.

I looked at the GFS, NAM and HRRR. Google tropical tidbits. You can find the models that way. You can also find the Euro model here: https://weather.us/model-charts/euro/te ... 1800z.html

Thank you for the info!

I did see a little bit of that grainy snow/sleet in my backyard, I thought it was some leftover chlorine powder from a half empty packet that was blowing around last night.

As many on this board have told me a number of times, don't worry about what the surface/precip maps look like at long range. Its all about the 500mb pattern. Am awaiting the 12z GFS, but the 0z and 6z both show a rather strong ULL moving through southern NM and AZ aroudn 1/28, and the last few runs have at least shown a more persistent trough out west during this time period. Should this trend hold, it would indicate a more favorable pattern, at least precip-wise. It's all entertainment at this point, but end of January is likely the next period to keep an eye on.

Yeah I think it was a bust. I'm at work and the roads were just wet, no sleet or snow made all the difference. Perhaps its not over though? I haven't been able to look outside since sunrise. Exciting nonetheless.

Sorry if this sounds harsh ... but this is not a bust. I don't know what you were expecting when you awoke, but right now in Austin we have most overpasses iced over. Sleet falling in places around town and not melting, adding to the ice. APD is working numerous accidents and has asked people to stay off the roads. The radar at 9:30 am shows more inbound sleet and maybe snow from the west for the next few hours.

Try telling our first responders right now this was a bust. The event is not over. SMH.

I guess its gotten worse. At 6:30am it was just some wet roads and no precip, cars going normal speed. Radar was showing a little something to nothing but nothing hit my windshield but a little drizzle. Guy on tv said something was trying to come up from San Antonio but was weakening. He didn't even know,. I was expecting some white frozen precip on the ground so that I couldn't make it out of my neighborhood. Sleet or snow. I guess its here now. I'm stuck inside and haven't been able to look for the last 3+hrs.. Better late than never. I hope it turns to snow soon.

I haven’t seen any flakes yet but I’m just peeking outside. I think our street might be coated too, but it is hard to tell. We are on the side of a hill and I haven’t seen anyone try to go anywhere yet

Also, to anyone who knows how to pick up on severe weather in the models:

Any thoughts on the 12z GFS at hour 120 for NTX? Im not very experienced in looking at much other than short term models for this, but at that hour I see a 999mb surface low in the TX/OK panhandle, and in NTX I see 25kt surface winds to the NNE and 60 kt 850mb winds transitioning to the ENE at 700mb with precip falling. I might be wrong, but that looks severe-ish to me.

Man guys this is crazy! I don’t think I’ve seen this amount of ice at my place in Wharton since I was a lil kid back in the 90’s sometime. We already lost power. Getting the fireplace started now.

Alright I'll turn the sprinklers back on. My neighbor might get upset though, he already turned his truck over in the driveway!

An arctic airmass will settle across the region today leading to extreme cold conditions tonight (Tuesday night)/Wednesday morning. Low temperatures will range from single digits across the northern and northwest with mainly teens elsewhere . A Hard Freeze Watch (which is for temperatures at or below 10 degrees Fahrenheit) has been issued for areas across North Texas. Please remember to protect the things that are most vulnerable during extremely cold weather: people, pets, pipes and plants.

Kudos to the NAM as it was forecasting Freezing Temperatures earlier than the official forecast and is looking likely that it will verified. Down to 38 in Edinburg with some weather stations in Wunderground in the 36-37 range.

National Weather Service Brownsville TX
956 AM CST Tue Jan 16 2018

.DISCUSSION...The Arctic front has moved through all of Deep South
Texas and the Rio Grande Valley a few hours ahead of schedule.
Temperatures have fallen 15 to 25 degrees just a few hours in wake
of the front. Hebbronville has already reached freezing (32
degrees) and the rest of the Ranchlands should reaching freezing
at or shortly after Noon. The intense cold air advection and
latest NAM suggest most of the RGV seeing freezing temperatures
around 6 pm. With the earlier onset of freezing temperatures we
have moved up the timing of the Freezing Warnings and Wind Chill
Advisories along with Winter Weather Advisories. No freezing
rain/drizzle is being reported at this time but with temperatures
at 32 degrees and drizzle beginning to develop in Hebbronville
freezing of bridges, overpasses, some roadways could be imminent.
