ATL: DORIAN - Post-Tropical - Discussion

So is Dorian completely extratropical by now? There's still a bit of convection lingering around the core and new convection keeps popping up briefly. Did he reach cat 2 again while tropical?

It seems like a hybrid right now, more extratropical than tropical but I'm not seeing any obvious frontal features. I'd personally consider it a hurricane right now, but it should be fully ET soon.

About 500+ KM away from the center of Dorian and am currently experiencing wind gusts of around 65 MPH already. Definitely overperforming thus far.

I'd say he is stubbornly hanging on to his subtropical (or hybrid) status.

My family is all in Yarmouth. Haven't heard from them in an hour or so - I'm assuming cell service is being pretty spotty. Yarmouth Airport reported a sustained wind of 52 MPH gusting to 80 MPH on the backside of Dorian. My parents and I have been through quite a few hurricanes recently (Arthur, Earl, Kyle, Noel) and they were telling me that so far the damage seems pretty comparable to Arthur. Lots of trees down, power out, transmission lines down everywhere. Stay safe everyone!

The Grand Etang station (on Cape Breton) may display wild numbers this evening. I wouldn't use that station as representative of the intensity though - it has a tendency to run high due to Les Suetes winds. Same with Wreckhouse in Newfoundland.

This will almost certainly be Halifax's worst storm since Juan, and may even surpass it as it's much, much bigger. The winds on the backside of the storm are looking even worse than the front so we might even see more damage after the eye passes.

I can't tell what the pressure is right now in the eye, but the lowest I am seeing is at a couple private stations near downtown Halifax recording 960 mb. The center is still about 50 miles from Halifax.

Officially extratropical now. However, NHC is maintaining advisories. I'd probably put 2100Z as the transition time in the best track...it seemed still tropical at 18Z but probably isn't now.

47.6225 units. It is quite a large number (exceeding 40 units is somewhat rare), but both Matthew '16 (50.94) and Irma '17 (64.8925) had more in recent years. You'd have to go back to Ivan '04 (70.38) to get another as least as large though.

I do believe this is the first official, undisputed, landfall Dorian has made after the Bahamas. The Carolina landfall is still being debated. What a beast of a storm.
