If models are right, we'll need a new female L name...

Female L names NOT available: Leslie, Lidia, Lili, Linda, Lisa, Lorena
If I were to choose a replacement for Laura, it would be Lissette. My next choices are Lucinda and Leticia.

I’d go with something more modern unlike most of the other old people names that rule the lists
Lindsey, Lexi, Lola, Lyla, Leah, Lena

Won't help us finish off any name on the original list, with Laura being a replacement for Lili we only got to use twice.

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

I like Lucinda, it's pretty. Or maybe Lucy (my little cousin's name). I guess Lillian is too close to Lili...although that doesn't seem to be that much of a factor.

Laura, Lucy and Lisette were the three options to replace Lili.
My top 3 options are Lucy, Louise/Louisa and Lena/Lina.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

The likes of Dorian and Laura should show everyone why it would be dumb to retire Imelda or Isaias

Lauren is my proposal. That’s my sister’s name and it would really bug her! Rina replaced Rita so there is precedent for using a similar name for the replacement.

Unlikely as Lidia (same pronunciation) is in use in the EPAC.

Laura is quite interesting in that it hit all three storm types once before (what is almost certainly) retirement. It was a tropical storm during its first use in 1971, a subtropical storm for most of its life in 2008 (although it did turn tropical at the end), and now a hurricane in 2020. Quite a run for this name.

Retirement is at least 99.9% likely according to CSU’s Phil K.

Louise would be nice, but I think it sounds too much like "Luis".
I'd go with Lyndsey, Leah, Lucy, Lucinda or Luanne.

The most amazing part and the biggest difference from 2005: we've made it this far with only one name that is pretty much a retirement shoo-in. We may only retire one "normal" name despite going all the way through the alphabet.

Agreed, it is remarkable. I don't see anything other than Dorian or Laura really warranting retirement up until this point.

For 2019 I could see Imelda getting requested. As for 2020, some outside possibilities for retirement are Cristobal (given Mexico’s track record), Isaias (it was similar to Gloria 1985 which was retired), and Sally (depending on how much damage it does).

Why do they retire names? Seems like such an unnecessary logistical nightmare. Random generate names at the start of each year. Done. Money and time saved.

And just how does one "randomly generate" a name? That seems much more a nightmare to me than the present system.

Honest question but does anyone on the gulf coast even remember Imelda? Like the average non weather geek layperson? Especially after Texas has gone through severe storms like Harvey, and with extreme western LA with Laura? I made the case earlier in this thread that we have to start accounting for urban density here, where ANY landfalling cyclone is going to do damage no matter the intensity.

Also a logistical nightmare: generating an entire unique 21-name list before every single year.
