Within 25 miles of the US/Mexico Border it's a very good idea to carry ID with you at all times and be ready to show it because the Courts have said that Border Patrol and Customs agents DO have the right to ask you for it if they feel that you are acting in a suspicious manner (or driving a vehicle they are suspicious about). I chase storms down here and when I had my pickup which had a camper shell on it I would get stopped all of the time and asked to produce ID (something about all of those radio antennas on the truck I guess). When I got the van, they would stop me on occasion but now that the dog rides with me all of the time they don't because they know illegals don't like perros (dogs). My son has it even harder since he is Filipino-American and has the look and stature of a young Mexican male so he definitely carries ID with him. BTW, THAT issue has also been before the Courts as well and they said that the BP was correct. BTW this bit about the 25 mile zone from the Border has been in place LONG before the current administration hit office (or even the one before).

Canada needs some illegal immigrants and fast. Our own home based population is declining. Thanks to 250,000 immigrants a year, it's keeping steady. We're more a waste of space, in the sense that we have so much land and hardly any people. Strange...

The government will never send them back en masse. Why? Because if they do, our economy will collapse.

The fact is, illegal immigration can't be stopped, as long as life in our nation is better than life in mexico. If we close one entry point, they'll find another. People are that desperate to improve their lives.

The logical solution is to loosen immigration controls, not tighten them.

Actually, the logical solution is to increase Border Security and also establish a workable Guest Worker program. However, the Chamber of Commerce will never go for the Guest Worker program because that would then mean that the workers would have to be paid at least minmum wage and be covered by various Labor statutes-something the business who hire illegals don't want. Personally, my belief is that the first thing that must be done is to hang those who hire illegals from the nearest lampost and then we can tackle the other issues.

Er, how exactly does a Mexican go about becoming a legal immigrant, as opposed to an illegal immigrant?

Why not build a processing center like Ellis Island on the US-Mexico border? Wouldn't that solve the problem of illegal immigrants being here undocumented? Why would anybody moving to the US for a better life choose to live with all the stresses of being an illegal immigrant over immigrating legally through the system?

For crying out loud...its our country. Aren't you tired of having to listen to phone messages going through the spiel about for espaniol push 4. The early waves of immigrants in this country quickly assimilated and learned English. Some of the marchers in this weekends demonstration carried a Mexican Flag. The president of Mexico took out full page ads in LA, NY an DC asking for a voice in forming the new immigration policy.

Its our country...secure the boarders and quit screwing up our kids education system that has to Leave No child Behind...even an illegal child has to recieve educational benefits.

Not really. In fact, sometimes I use the spanish option for fun. It's always good to educate yourself. Next I want to learn Mandarin Chinese.

This is a really big and oft-repeated myth. Why do you think "Chinatown", "Little Italy", and other ethnic neighborhoods exist in all of our big cities?

The illegals already broke the law in the first place by not coming here ,for lack of a better word properly, they should be thrown out, kicked out, whatever!

If I sound harsh, sorry, I am a first generation immigrant, my parents came here the old fashioned way, were quaranteed, tested, etc, had to have sponsors and worked hard to get where they were. These freeloaders make me sick

Angelwing, I have to agree with your sentiments. My grandparents immigrated. And they had to learn English to become citizens. They didn't expect anyone to open a Romanian-speaking school for them or provide teacher who spoke their language to tutor them at taxpayer expense.

People who break the law will continue to do so. Our Constitution doesn't infer government assistance via taxpayer dollars to lawbreakers. But, when a non-citizen breaks the law, we have to run them through our justice system and incarceration BEFORE they can be deported. Statistics show an alarming percentage of illegals breaking the law in border states, much higher than the percentage of the population. Experts conclude that many, many criminals cross the border, as even the criminal business is better in the USA.

The difference lately, many people come to U.S. just for what they can get out of it, not to become a part of our society. There is a HUGE difference. Living in the Caribbean, I know thousands have this attitude. They HATE the United States. But, they will do ANYTHING, including break the law, to get there. When they do, they don't want to pay taxes, speak the language, join the community, or anything else but just make as much $$ as possible and send it back home.

We just can't open our borders for all the less fortunate in the world to come get as much as they can, then "retire" rich back in the "home" country. We would have 3 billion people in a year and the entire economy would collapse.

I'm not unsympathetic to the plight of many other parts of the world where people struggle in poverty and disease, the likes of which most of us could never imagine. Our entire system of "melting pot" was to continually bring in "new blood", recharging our society with new talent and cultures in those who wanted to contibute and become U.S. citizens. A perfect recent example, Vietnamese. What a wonderful, hardworking group of new citizens in the last 30 years - WOW!

They came here so their kids could do those things, but they often chose not to themselves.

Just because some residents in some left-wing states wish to skip teaching kids English does not mean that's what the immigrants want.
