I read something yesterday that just blew my mind ... there was a wildfire which popped up along Mopac near Windsor Road. The cause of the fire, according to the Austin Fire Dept., was "spontaneous combustion." Can you believe that?! It was literally so hot, the fire started by itself. Amazing.

I saw that - they say it was started by spontaneous combustion of a compost pile! Up in Dallas I remember seeing spontaneous fires in those big hay rolls you see out in fields but those were hay rolls that were damp when rolled.

Did anyone ever say what started that fire of I35 just south of Toll45? The one that burned the field and the warehouses?

Shoshana I have passed the info regarding the Humane Society animals to my older daughter, who works for a Vet Clinic. She will help get the word out. I hope they can get their air back on soon.

I can't believe it is 111. My ac is holding out though. Austin Energy doing a fine job.

Thanks!

KXAN is reporting 112 but I haven't seen official confirmation

AUSTIN (KXAN) - The outdoor temperature reached a blistering 112 degrees just before 2:30 p.m. in Austin on Sunday, which tied the record for the hottest day ever in the city.

OK, NWS is now saying 112F too

I don't know if I should be worried or not ... yesterday we hit 112. Today, we're running three degrees warmer at 10 a.m. than yesterday. Does that mean 115?!

We had light rain most of the morning and it's only 80 so far. Hopefully this rain and cloudiness makes it way down there.

12zECMWF run is really interesting.....it shows a tropical cyclone developing south of Houston and than moving SW paralleling the Texas coast from Brazoria County all the way to the mouth of the Rio Grande. Also of note its the speed of this possible cyclone which it would take about 3 days to make its journey thru the Texas coast...Interesting days ahead!! :D

Which means depending on the size of the system, it could give coastal areas and points inland a good drink of water for the entire Texas coast. Or it could act as giant vacum cleaner and suck all the moisture out the area and slam right south of the Rio Grande and leave much of us dry or with very little rain. I hope for the first scenerio, but I am starting to feel like Charlie Brown (Portastorm) and Lucy with the football thing in the winter and this current drought and seeing maps seven days out that only leave us disappointed. Rather see an open wave slam the area rather than a closed low of any kind right now.

I feel the same way cctxhurricanewatcher. I'm really starting to fear all the rain staying offshore with this potential system.

DFW commented on that very scenario as keeping moisture from reaching this far inland. Since this has been the Summer of Suck, I'm going with a deeper system that leaves us dry up this way. I hope you folks down south fare better.

Yeah, the models haven't been as generous as days past regarding rain, but a very good cold front will be coming through the state Labor day weekend. Lets hope this front can squeeze as much moisture out ahead of it as possible for everybody at least. As far as temperatures, looks like a pretty sure bet significant relief is on the way, helping some of our outrageous electric bills!

I actually really don't want a cold front. That will push the tropical system farther away from us giving us little rain. Come back later cold front! I want rain!!!!!!!!!!!

How about a cold front which stalls across Texas ... and then absorbs the possible tropical system? The best (and maybe the worst!) of both worlds!! :P
