Never saw more than a microscopic flake mixed with mist in Biloxi. Looks like the snow, system wide, is winding down.

This is SO annoying. Houston, Baton Rouge, New Orleans all get snow and I'm sitting at 57 degrees with the sun out. I see no hope for even a flurry here. This is pathetic and I'm sorry very very wrong. :grr:

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2451
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1143 AM CST THU DEC 11 2008

AREAS AFFECTED...CNTRL AND ERN MS

CONCERNING...HEAVY SNOW

VALID 111743Z - 112145Z

A VERTICALLY STACKED LOW ACROSS MS/AL WILL MATURE BY ABOUT 21Z
BEFORE BEGINNING TO FILL. HEAVY BANDS OF RAIN AND SNOW ASSOCIATED
WITH WRAP-AROUND MOISTURE AS WELL AS WEAK FRONTOGENESIS WILL SHIFT
EWD WITH THE MAIN LOW...AND ALSO DIMINISH FROM S TO N.

BURSTS OF LOCALLY HEAVY SNOW HAVE BEEN OCCURRING WITH THE HELP OF
STRONG VERTICAL MOTION IN THE MID LEVELS AND DESPITE MARGINAL LOW
LEVEL TEMPERATURE PROFILES IN THE MID TO UPPER 30S F. 17Z SURFACE
ANALYSIS SHOWED THE COOLEST WET BULB TEMPERATURES ACROSS CNTRL AND
SRN MS IN THE LOWER 30S F BUT MUCH WARMER VALUES WERE OBSERVED OVER
NRN MS AND AL WITH VALUES NEAR 40 F.

THE GREATEST CHANCE OF SNOW WILL BE OVER CNTRL/ERN/SRN MS WHERE THE
COOLEST TEMPERATURES PROFILES EXIST NEAR CLOSER TO THE UPPER LOW
CENTER. HOWEVER...MOISTURE AND LIFT WILL BE FOCUSED FARTHER N WITH
TIME...ACROSS CNTRL AND NRN MS. THUS...THE HEAVIEST SNOW OVER THE
NEXT SEVERAL HOURS SHOULD OCCUR FROM PIB NWD ACROSS E CNTRL MS.

I know brent...what a bummer. But we rarely if ever get the chance of a good snowfall and you've had more than we have.

Yeah, if ya want to see snow, ya need to live somewhere else. Its just a freak thing to have fallen where it did.

Well yeah, a bit, let's review:

January 19, 2008-1.5 inches of snow, first real accumulating snow in 6 years(!, which is insane) Forecast had been for 3-4 inches but I was overall pleased since it fell during the day and didn't melt right away. Some snow hung around in the shade for 3 days til it rained.

January 16, 2008-Freak light dusting that very quickly fell and then very quickly melted(not forecast)

Before that(I had travelled to see snow a few times but none in my yard)

January 3, 2002-1 inch of snow, gone quickly(big snow south of me, again)

2000/2001, it snowed 3-4 times, all 1 inch or less.(One surprise, one bust that should have been more, again, but the best winter I've seen overall).

Last time I saw a 2+ inch snow: February 1998(freak event)

Last time I saw a 6+ inch snow: Blizzard of 1993!!!!!!(I barely remember it unfortunately)

Yeah, I'm bitter. Places north of New Orleans got more snow in 6 hours than I've seen in 15 years. Happened SW of Houston in 2004 as well. It kind of makes me sick to be honest. I don't mind when it snows in Memphis or Nashville or the North Georgia mountains because it's supposed to snow more there, this is just wrong.

But the one thing I'm hoping for... it's only December 11th. Most of our snow has come in January/February(and the blizzard was in March), so I'm optimistic we'll get snow before it's over.

Oh, to get back to this event, how much snow fell in Jackson, MS? Looks like they barely got anything and they had a Winter Storm Warning out. It's raining there now.

It was great to see the snow even though it only lasted a few hours. Still surprised we received accumulating snow without a real arctic blast of air (temp barely touched 32 degrees at my house). That was a magical upper level low! Lets just hope it's not 75 Christmas day :grr: !

Hmmmm, this is just across the line in Georgia(less than 10 miles) and I'm north of the line, maybe all hope isn't lost to at least see a brief snow shower.

...LIGHT SNOW POSSIBLE ACROSS PORTIONS OF NORTH AND WEST GEORGIA TONIGHT...

A STRONG COLD FRONT HAS PUSHED THROUGH THE STATE THIS
AFTERNOON...USHERING IN WINDY AND MUCH COLDER CONDITIONS. AS THE
COLD AIR CONTINUES TO FILTER IN TONIGHT...A STRONG UPPER LEVEL LOW
PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL TRACK ACROSS THE FAR NORTHWEST PORTION OF THE
STATE...BRINGING A ROUND OF LIGHT PRECIPITATION TO PORTIONS OF
NORTH AND WEST GEORGIA THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT. A POCKET OF VERY
COLD AIR IN THE UPPER LEVELS SURROUNDING THE LOW WILL ALLOW FOR
SOME OF THE PRECIPITATION TO MIX WITH SNOW FLURRIES OR VERY LIGHT
SNOW. ANY FLAKES THAT FALL WILL LIKELY REMAIN NORTH AND WEST OF A
HAMILTON...TO GRIFFIN...TO GAINESVILLE LINE.

ALTHOUGH SOME QUESTIONS REMAIN AS TO THE TIMING AND POSITION OF
THE UPPER LOW...TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN WELL ABOVE FREEZING
ACROSS THE AREA...WITH LOWS BOTTOMING OUT IN THE MID AND UPPER 30S
OVERNIGHT. THEREFORE...NO ACCUMULATION OF SNOW IS EXPECTED.

Intersting factoids from NWS Houston today...

FOR WHAT IT`S WORTH...THE LAST LAND FALLING HURRICANE ON GALVESTON
ISLAND BEFORE HURRICANE IKE WAS HURRICANE JERRY IN 1989. THERE
WAS 1.7 INCHES OF SNOW ON DECEMBER 22 1989. HURRICANE ALICIA MADE
LANDFALL IN 1983 AND THERE WERE SEVERAL DAYS WITH SNOW FLURRIES IN
DECEMBER OF 1983. PERHAPS JUST A COINCIDENCE.

Another interesting factoid....prior to this week, the last time it snowed in New Orleans & Houston was in December 2004...the following hurricane season featured Katrina & Rita. Hopefully no similar result from the snow yesterday and today in those same locations and the upcoming 2009 hurricane season.

Does anyone here know how much snow fell officially at N.O.? If not exactly, does anyone have a good estimate? Thanks in advance.
