My friend on St. Croix called again. He says the road in the rainforest is full of rocks as big as footballs, downtown Christiansted is flooding, the water guts (like open drainage ditches, taking off some of the water from the mountains to the sea) are overflowing, and his house has a very clean (flooded) floor now.

caribepr now this big area of rain has a invest #97L so the watching goes up a bit as the chance for more than rain increases although if it develops it will be already north of the islands but you never know.

North is what I am hoping and fast. Land people here are ready but a lot of boat friends are going to be scrambling in some nasty weather if it doesn't move out.

SATELLITE IMAGERY AND THE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED THAT SEVERAL
AREAS OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUE TO MOVE NORTH NORTHEAST
ACROSS THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN...ANEGADA PASSAGE...AND ENTER PARTS
OF THE OFFSHORE ATLANTIC. THESE STORMS WILL CONTINUE TO PRODUCE
HEAVY DOWN POURS.

MARINERS CAN ALSO EXPECT PERIODS OF GUSTY WINDS 35 TO 40
KNOTS...LOCALLLY HEAVY WAVES AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING. BOATERS
SHOULD SEEK SAFE HARBOR IMMEDIATELY UNTIL THE STORM PASSES.

THUNDERSTORMS POSE MANY HAZARDS TO MARINE SAFETY. STRONG WINDS...ROUGH

I wonder if they put that out because it seems like it is clearing up...even though obviously there is a mess south (um, and east and north!) of us. I'm wondering if I can sneak in a couple of hours with the cart OPEN!

Depending on how the situation unfolds in the next few hours in terms how much rain falls in the area they can let the watch expire at 8 PM or extend it further in time.

Hmm.. not a lot of rain yesterday, neither today. I just came back from a trip to Caguas - I needed my sunglasses 8-) Right now it's cloudy but it doesn't look like we'll get a lot of rain soon.

It's been raining at a steady moderate rate for several hours now. It's quiet dark here with heavy low clouds moving in from the south.

BVIGal stay safe. Sounds scary.

Posted 1:48 in wrong thread (97Invest), so I moved it here:

A few minutes ago they read a statement on the radio. The evacuation is "voluntary" now. Don't know if it was a mistake earlier, or what. But I do know they opened one of the churches as a shelter.

They also said all schools closed until further notice, all government employees (except essential workers) stay home, and nobody panic.

We are hosting (annually) the Interline Regatta (American Airlines employees) and someone told me they saw the boats going out of the Moorings this morning, in this weather! I figure a busy week for our water search & rescue, VISAR.

It's still raining in squalls & fits, not as heavy as earlier. I can't see much, down the hill or up, due to low clouds, but is seems to be getting brighter out there, so hopefully we'll get a break soon. You see which way the rain is moving on radar? Friend with a weather station just told me he's reading E/SE direction winds.

Rain 7amSun - 7amMon 1.21 (most of this since 6am)
7am Mon to 12:40pm 1.81 Total in about 6 hrs: 3.1

Posted previously, at 12:39
I haven't even had time to get on here this morning. We are having floods in the BVI! Several guts have burst their walls and flooding surrounding areas. One major gut in the capital, Road Town, has burst and the resulting flood caused fuel leaks from a gas station to mix with the water. Consequently, a huge area was put under mandatory evacuation, all residences and businesses, because they have no way to clean up the water, it is still pouring down the hills. A lot of people are without phone service (water in the lines). One of the businesses in the area flooded with gasoline is our country's food distributor, wholesaler and the biggest supermarket. All of their employees were told over the radio not to come to work this morning. We know one of their buildings has water in it, the others are a bit higher. Sure hope it doesn't get in the warehouses, or the country will have a food shortage. All the banks are closed, doctor's office, etc. It is bad, and as I type, it is pouring gusty, bandy-type rain.

A very heavy thunderstorm is over San Juan as I type.It began at around 1:45 PM and briefly the power went out.Over 2 inches has fallen in the past hour in parts of northern Puerto Rico early his afternoon. So if I am not here you know why.But I am safe and dry.

Very weird. We haven't had a drop since I last updated. It is very overcast with light breezes, occasional gusts that aren't much at all. I hope it continues, as there is still standing water, one to two inches, on the ground.

For the members at Culebra,Vieques and the USVI (the rest of PR and BVI and SXM, too).

Sounds like a rough couple of days down there. Great time to curl up with a good book!

Please be careful and let us know how things are going.

Irina, I am particularly concerned about the conditions in SXM. With Barb off island, there hasn't been too much news except what you post.

Thanks.

Does it count if I'm curled up with a BAD book? This book is so stupid, but with bits well written enough that I have to keep going...I HATE this book! :D But I have a good Brunswick stew in the crock pot, RatCat curled up cozy. All is well on Culebra (of course, it's not raining now, so yeah, I'm content). Sorry for the sort of side line weather related post!
