You can't really tell intensity by just looking at IR. Dvorak is a good estimate, recon is best. But an IR image in no way confirms that this is a cat 5.

I forgot that, and speaking of which, what is the latest numbers for Dvorak intensity?

Dvorak can actually be used to determine intensity, but it's more labor intensive, not as practical as more modern techniques available these days...so for the sake of discussion.... It's incorrect to say it can't be done by imagery...but, as you pointed out, it is used as more of an estimate... No disrespect to anyone...

True. But it can help.

The Weather Channel is listing Iota at 160mph and the 2nd strongest Atlantic November hurricane on record after the 1932 Cuba hurricane that was 175mph...

Currently thinking around 150k/905mb for peak intensity(that would make Iota into top 10). Hopefully this levels off soon for landfall region’s sake.

I’m going to predict recon finds extrapolated pressures in the range of 906-911 mbar, and a dropsonde pressure of 913-915 mbar.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

The Greek letters in 2020 have almost batted for the cycle - just need Gamma to get upgraded in the post season analysis.

Subtropical Storm Alpha,
Tropical Storm Beta/Gamma/Theta
C1 - ?
C2 - Zeta
C3 - Epsilon
C4 - Delta/Eta
C5 - Iota

I just absolutely cannot wrap my head around the fact that we are tracking the 9th letter of the Greek alphabet, a Cat 5, on November 16th...

Current IR is the best it has ever looked. Would be surprised if recon doesn’t find a stronger storm.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

What's even crazier is that if an ERC doesn't take place before landfall, Iota *may* have at least a shot of going sub-900... Insane

Objective satellite estimates suggest Iota has already peaked. We'll see if they are correct.

The overall shape and presentation of the system on the latest IR is very reminiscent of Dean (2007), so I’m thinking 150-155 knots and 900-905 mb.

Iota is expected to make landfall very close to where Eta made landfall.
