Austin had a total of 90 days with 100 degrees or higher in 2011. All-time record.
Three months (1/4 of a year) of pure MISERY.

I actually thought the heat was pretty dry here in houston. I had 96 here at TPB weather center.

Youre right about the PDO reading for '57, that plays a big part. Like i said, i like the '72-'73 analog. Had some big cold blasts here.

It was ridiculous, like weatherdude said misery misery misery. The worst thing was it was also historically warm at night too. You wake up for work/school and already by 9/10 AM it's was already 99F. Everyday stepping out the moment you open your door same feeling as when you open your oven. Literally. By late August many of us learned to appreciate a simple, refreshing 100 degree day over 105+

Still though, this is too hot we need rain again...

Astonishing pictures indeed from New Horizons! Hey you think we can arrange a trip for our venerable wxman57 to flyby Pluto? -387F will make him beg for winter here :cheesy:, I like the sound of that.

I refer to it as the Death Summer. It was just horrible and I really hope we don't see anything to that extreme for a long time.

Looking at the MJO models it looks like it's gonna fall apart as it moves into the western hemisphere.

Do you see any hint of a possible change for us between the 20th of July and August 1st Ntwx? As far as I can see it doesn't look too promising. It's back and forth with either the high eventually moving or it sits in place and strengthens even more. Going by the local NWS and news mets, the bet is it's going to stay and intensify.

In trying to change the subject to cooler weather, this story from the Washington Times was in our e-clips this morning at work. Has anyone seen it? I wonder how a Maunder Minimum would effect Texas weather(?), assuming it happens in the next 20 years.

Does anyone know of any weather records in this area dating back to the last Maunder Minimum? I guess they would be tree rings, and manuscript accounts. Anyway. Good read. Something to research!

A team of European researchers unveiled last week a scientific model showing that the Earth is likely to experience a “mini ice age” from 2030 to 2040 as a result of decreased solar activity.

THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURES SHOULD OCCUR SUNDAY AND MONDAY
WHEN 500MB HEIGHTS CLIMB ABOVE 595-DAM...AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO
INDICATE SOME TRIPLE DIGIT HIGH TEMPS DURING THAT TIME FRAME. IT
LOOKS LIKE DEWPOINTS WILL DROP INTO THE 60S DURING THE AFTERNOON
HOURS

Some dry heat? :P

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AUSTIN/SAN ANTONIO TX
635 AM CDT WED JUL 15 2015

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 309 AM CDT WED JUL 15 2015/

SHORT TERM (TODAY THROUGH THURSDAY)...

HOT AND DRY. THAT SUMS UP THE FORECAST FOR THE NEXT 7 DAYS AND
BEYOND.

NO RAIN IS EXPECTED AS HIGH PRESSURE REMAINS CENTERED OVER EASTERN
TEXAS. THE RIDGE EXTENDS NORTHWARD INTO THE PLAINS. THIS WILL KEEP
OUR AREA IN THE TYPICAL SUMMER TIME PATTERN OF BRIEF MORNING LOW
CLOUDS GIVING WAY TO A MOSTLY SUNNY AND HOT AFTERNOON. SINKING AIR
UNDERNEATH THE HIGH PRESSURE WILL ALLOW FOR HIGH TEMPERATURES
ACROSS THE HILL COUNTRY...I-35 CORRIDOR...AND COASTAL PLAINS TO
REMAIN IN THE MID 90S. ACROSS THE RIO GRANDE PLAINS UPPER 90S TO
NEAR THE CENTURY MARK IS EXPECTED. DECENT DEWPOINTS DUE TO THE
SOUTHEAST WINDS SUSTAINING THE FLOW OF GULF MOISTURE INTO TEXAS
WILL KEEP OVERNIGHT LOWS ACROSS MOST OF THE AREA IN THE MID 70S.

LONG TERM (THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY)...
THE HIGH PRESSURE WILL SHIFT SLIGHTLY EASTWARD LATE IN THE WEEK
INTO THE WEEKEND. THIS WILL ALLOW TEMPERATURES OVER SOUTH CENTRAL
TEXAS TO BEGIN A SLOW WARM UP. BY EARLY NEXT WEEK THE RIO GRANDE
PLAINS SHOULD HAVE HIT 100 DEGREES...WITH THE I-35 CORRIDOR
FLIRTING WITH THE CENTURY MARK MONDAY AND TUESDAY. EVEN WITH A
BETTER SOUTHEAST FLOW DUE TO THE POSITION OF THE HIGH STILL NOT
EXPECTING ANY PRECIPITATION ACROSS SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS. BY
TUESDAY THE HIGH SHIFTS BACK OVER CENTRAL TEXAS ALLOWING
TEMPERATURES TO "COOL" BY A DEGREE OR TWO. DESPITE THE RIDGE
FLATTENING A BIT THE GFS AND ECMWF KEEP IT OVER TEXAS THROUGH AT
LEAST THE NEXT 10 DAYS. AFTER A SLOW AND VERY WET START TO THE
SUMMER IN MAY AND JUNE IT APPEARS THAT THE TEXAS SUMMER HAS
ARRIVED.

Ah, the extended cold which began last September is finally over! Temperatures reached the mid 90s across southeast Texas. I was outside enjoying the heat all last weekend and I think I might take Friday off for another extended weekend outside. The only sad part about this time of year is that the first cold front of the year will arrive in 5-6 weeks. Better get out there and enjoy the heat while you can!

I do like to have summer thunderstorms (which we didn't have in 2011), just not every single day as we had earlier this spring. 2011 was nice and warm, though.

How's Lake Travis doing now, Portastorm?

Thanks to those spring rains you referenced, Lake Travis is almost full! Sitting 671 feet, just 9 feet below "full" level. The lake level hasn't been this high since July 2010.

After not having a 100F+ reading this year its been 100+ the last couple of days and the 7 day forecast calls for 100+ everyday :sun: Looks like the Canicula is firmly in place!
