16 minutes ago Asia - AFP

JAKARTA (AFP) - The confirmed death toll from the massive earthquake and tidal waves that devastated much of Asia's coastline passed 55,000, with officials warning the figure was likely to rise steeply.

In Indonesia, the government's disaster relief centre said at least 27,174 were killed after the country took the full force of the huge earthquake and tidal waves that swallowed entire coastal villages.

Indonesia's health ministry said at least 27,174 had been killed in the quake as the true scale of the catastrophe becomes clear.

In Sri Lanka more than 17,600 people, including at least 70 foreigners, were killed in Sunday's disaster.

More than 8,500 people were reported killed in India with many more victims expected, officials said.

Among them were about 4,000 in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, close to the epicentre of the quake, where thousands were missing after five villages were swept away, an official said.

More than 1,400 people were killed, among them more than 700 foreign tourists, in southern Thailand, officials said, putting the toll at 1,439.

In Malaysia 65 people, including many elderly and children, were killed, officials said, while at least 90 people were killed in Myanmar.

At least 52 people including two British holidaymakers were killed while another 68 were missing in the tourist paradise of Maldives, officials said.

In Bangladesh a father and child were killed after a tourist boat capsized from large waves, local officials said.

Fatalities also occurred on the east coast of Africa where 100 fishermen were declared dead in Somalia and 10 in Tanzania.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake west of the Indonesian island of Sumatra measured 9.0 on the Richter scale -- making it the largest quake worldwide in four decades.

Thailand: 1,439

Wow!!!! This is getting worse and worse. And the UN decides to make it political by calling our donation, the largest of all, "Stingy".

Precisely! These are the UN Under Secretary-General's exact words:

But U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the United States and other Western nations were being "stingy" with relief funds, saying there would be more available if taxes were raised.

TSUNAMI DEATH TOLL SOARS

More than 59,000 people have died following the Asian earthquake disaster - but it is feared the death toll may grow even higher.

See Sky News and Sky News Active for the latest footage.

The UN says only the biggest disaster operation the world has ever seen will be enough to help the millions left homeless.

Several nations, including Britain, have already sent planes carrying emergency supplies.

Indonesia's vice president said up to 25,000 people may have died on Sumatra alone.

Up to 18,000 were killed in Sri Lanka and 11,400 in India, including 7,000 in the Andaman and Nicobar islands.

About 1,500 people died when the train they were in was hit by the tsunami that swept Sri Lanka's coastline.

In Thailand, the death toll is expected to reach 2,000. Some 800 bodies have been found at a hotel in the Khao Lak area.

Phi Phi island in Thailand

More than 50 people were killed in the Maldives after water inundated the low-lying string of islands.

In Malaysia, 59 people are confirmed dead. Most of them drowned on the tourist island of Penang. There are still many people missing.

The death toll in Myanmar has risen to 90 and more than 100 have died in along the northern coast of Somalia, nearly 4,000 miles from the epicentre of the quake.

Deaths have also been reported in Tanzania, Bangladesh, the Seychelles and Kenya.

The quake measured 9 on the Richter scale and is the fourth strongest ever recorded.

150,000K+ would not surprise me at all.

India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the entire affected area is VERY densely populated. Sadly, the dense population means there will be many more casualties in the coming days.

I am utterly devastated. All these disasters, are just too much. First the hurricanes in Florida, now this horrible tsunami. If I had been down there, I would have been taking a long jebwalk, and that terrible wave would have swept me away, I would have had no time at all to get away. I can't stand these disasters anymore, its getting so I don't want to look at the news anymore.

I have many beefs with the U.N. I'm sure this is going to be looked at as a contest of who can pour out the most money. What they need is "people" aid, not "dead people(Presidents)" aid if you catch my drift

But at the same time, we can't ignore what is happening around us. It is our duty and calling to help our fellow man/neighbor no matter how far away they are

I just saw a picture of a little girl from Sweden, walking around with a sign saying that her parents and two brothers are still missing. That poor child is alone over there.

Now for some good news... An American couple on their honeymoon(I posted about this yesterday) have turned up alive and well... it turns how they were in Vietnam when the quake hit.

Dennis - I've been sitting here thinking for two days now how this sounds like something out of the Bible. But I was too afraid to.
