The 913 is official now in the position update. We have a weird situation where Maria is the most intense storm of the year but 20mph away from the strongest of the year by wind speed.

I assume if the ERC did terminate then winds will increase and/or wind field will expand in response to the pressure drop.

Great question. I'm beginning to wonder if these really intense TCs have a unique version of ERCs that allows them to continue to intensify. Like something with the dynamics are different than the "typical" ERC. I also do not recall TCs intensifying like this while the secondary eyewall forms... This would be a fantastic research opportunity with the radar datasets from Irma and now Maria.

I noticed that these storms have often not had the more traditional circular eyewall surrounded by a moat. Their structure has been more of a continuous spiral. It might not explain everything, because sometimes these storm have had the more traditional structure, but I thought it was odd.

More and more mention of concentrated lightning in the developing core, as well...

Yeah a larger wind field is what I'm afraid of as it gets closer and closer. I'd love to see it stay small. Really it's Irma's unreal sustained wind in an area with much higher ambient pressures that throws things off a little, Maria seems a bit closer to normal on the wind/pressure relationship from what I've seen in previous years lol. Let's hope Maria doesn't decide to hit 185 as well, before it gets to Puerto Rico...

Looks like Maria is still intensifying. 175 MPH and ~910 mmHg for now.

That was the theory and people were doing it in sofla during irma, there were also homes and businesses taping windows, you can still see the glue..

Holy jeez. This is not the time for further rapid deepening. 910 ties it with Ivan and the 1924 Cuba hurricane as 10th most intense in the basin... and it still could drop further. This season, I swear...

I did have a window pop completely out of the frame during Irma, so I do get the pressure thing.

LUIS do not let guard down, MARIA is a monter WIND CANE pretty amazing, take it seriously because of Guadeloupe have been HIT POUND seriously!
I'm tired 2 hours of sleep only, but i can assume that all who are in the path of MARIA to be EXTREMELY VIGILANT, some people of Guadeloupe said that winds were like reactor of a plane and i can personnaly tell you that winds are tremendous, rainfall had been extreme in some areas like Saint-Claude with 459 millimeters BE PREPARED PR GOD WILL BLESS YOU AS THE OTHERS NEIGHBOURS i hope sincerely!
By the way i have no water in my locality, no TV, the satellite on the top of the building had been swept by the strong winds this morning as i'm in front of the sea only 20 meters from my balcon.

Really thankful to know you're okay, Gusty. I've been hearing of how seriously Maria affected Guadeloupe, with a man losing his life when a tree fell on him, as he as he ignored warnings to stay indoors and ventured outside. And I understand many are without power.

The outlook for Luis does indeed look dire. Maria's minimum central pressure is falling precipitously. At 4 PM, it was 920 MB. By 5 PM it had dropped to 916 MB. Now, it's down a further 3 MB to 913. It's just a matter of time before Maria's winds respond. I have a hunch the maximum sustained winds will be 175 mph by the time the eye reaches Puerto Rico's coast. Hope I'm wrong.

Yes that is what it is supposed to accomplish but it is an old wives tale. Much better to leave them closed.
