DayLilly - congrats to you as well! 10 years is impressive isn't it? When at one time, 10 years might have seemed impossible. Now doctors are creating miracles indeed. Saving lives and getting the word out. By the time my dad's colon cancer was diagnosed, it was inoperable and Stage IV. I know he missed very important warning signs. While my cancer isn't always considered a polite subject, I got over my embarrassment within a year of my diagnosis. I've personally been able to encourage about 15 people to be tested. To this day, people I casually have known thru my daughter's school or clubs/teams they joined at one time, have come up to me and whispered - I went in for my first colonoscopy. They then thank me because they usually ended up with at least one benign polyp.
I just wish my dad had been tested. I don't even think he had his first colonoscopy until after his cancer was diagnosed (probably via a blood test and/or stool smear).
Medicine has come a long way in 24 years.
Now they have shots that prevent 90% of cervical cancers! If the patient comes to them before the age of 30. Isn't that wonderful news?
I'm not for people running to the doctor for every ache and pain or sniffle. But to be smart about their health, take responsibility for it and get tested when it's time.
Geez, didn't mean to climb back up on that soapbox....LOL! Not for 10 more years as Azskyman said.....he he
Come celebrate with me.........

Ed, mark your calendar. On December 31, 2009 I will be PM'ing you and asking if you had your colonoscopy this year. If not, I'll be pestering you to do so early in 2010.
Just make sure you get one. Remember the prep is the worst part. And that bill. LOL Our ins. co. didn't pay for either of ours. Both applied to our individual $2500 deductibles. But the test is very important and one you shouldn't skip.

Thanks artist!
I'm participating in my area's Relay for Life on the 15th. Coincidentally it's my daughters' former Elementary's Team 10 year anniv. of having a team raise money for the event. I thought it was only fitting that I join them again, since it's their 10th and mine too. I've joined Relay for Life a few times, the survivor walk is very emotional and uplifting. Especially when a child walks with us. That is when you want to break down and cry. But then you look into their eyes and they demonstrate such courage. I'm getting goose bumps remembering past walks.......
Anyways, get checked everyone (who needs to......or is due for a colonoscopy, etc.)!

Awww Dee Bee, thanks so much for your kind words. It's now sunk in - I'm a TEN year cancer survivor. When I tell people, they are amazed and focus on that one word, ten. It is a milestone. I proudly took my survivor lap with a recent Relay for Life event. It was very moving. While walking I did realize I've neglected other medical appts., etc. All because we have extremely high copays and deductibles. Yes I know, no excuse but after hearing so many successful stories that night at Relay and knowing I am one for colon cancer, I made a personal promise to get my long over due pap, mammogram and even a physical (within reason....LOL). It just sucks to have lousy insurance.......but anyway, it hit me that night that here I've said from day one I'd never neglect my overall health and I kind of have done just that. So over the next few months I hope to make a few appts. with doctors who will be surprised to see me again!
