Beginning with South Park ...

South Park already uses the F word regularly...though it is bleeped out...

I would hope it is considered a fact, not an opinion. The meaning of a word can't change.

I don't mean that they meant literally smart, but courteously smart.

Why can't people just say "freaking" or something and not offend anyone? The language is bad enough on tv as it is...save it for those movies that get bombarded with it because I guess they think it's "cool" or something.
Most of the time, especially when a movie is filled with so much of it, I see it as poor writing, like "can't you think of something intelligent to say?" lol

Anyway, I find GD much more offensive. I cringe when I hear it. The other ones are just "potty mouth" but when you take God's name in vain, grrrrrrr.

Agreed Kelly. I just hate the ''f" word and the manner it is used in. I have history with the word and so I have personal issues. Using God's name is vain is very dispicable and offensive.

Except with the South Park Movie ... and YES, Comedy Central did play the entire movie uncensored early in the morning which I did tape. Otherwise, even though the South Park TV series does regularly use the word, it's never heard due to the bleeps.

OtherHD wrote:In all seriousness, here is my take on the curse word situation...

Being in high school, I definately hear where Stooge and others are coming from. I actually have no problem with teenagers cursing, as long as it's among their peers. It does get somewhat irritating when the F word is used seemingly every other word, as if that's the only adjective these kids know. But if used for emphasis, as the article suggests, it is fine with me. Again, it depends on where and when the word is being said. If you have common sense enough not to use it around adults, around the job, to your parents, to teachers, etc., then more power to you.

I disagree with the idea that if you use those words, you are somehow dumber, or not as refined as someone who doesn't. That's absurd. I curse around my friends, and yet my GPA is 4.5, I am top of my class, and I have never made below a B...EVER. I also have the decency not to do it around adults and ESPECIALLY not my family. If saying the F word around friends makes me uncouth or stupid in your eyes, then whatever. At least I know better.

As for airing the F word on network TV...I have no idea LOL...I guess we will see.

The use of strong language can be emphasized and portrayed tactfully IF USED in the right situations. Just using it to use it makes one look like a total ass IMHO.

Basically speaking, I have to agree with OtherHD 100% on his views about this.

The use of an expletive can be portrayed tactfully when used in the right situations?

Yes, Expletives when used at the right time can have a more profound effect when used selectively and cautiously... using it every other word or just using it to use it (like most rap songs, for example) have no profound effect and the effect is totally lost except for shock value (and that wears off and NO one pays attention to it).

The most perfect example IMHO, was in the TV series M*A*S*H during the last episode (before wildfires burned the whole set to the ground)when Alan Alda's character proclaims that "he was the luckiest son of a b!tch alive". Sure, it had shock value, but the timing and use of the phrase really expressed the emotion of the situation as they were set to go off the air.

Does that mean that we can say it here at S2K?
just kidding.

After the outrage wears off, it could become just another over-used and meaningless word.

I'd rather call someone a "boil on the groin of humanity." That's a lot more insulting and graphic, but it's not considered obscene. What's up with that?

Well.. people complain that T.V. isn't very real so maybe them saying the F word will reflect more of the truth.:):):):) It seems to have become a part of our lifestyle whether people like it or not:):). I am with OtherHD I swear at times myself. I don't swear just for the heck of it and I try and make sure I watch my mouth in certain situations but watching the sixth game of the National league championship and seeing my Cubs lose I let loose a few F words:):). You drive in traffic you hear that word and others echo thoughout traffic:):). Heck people use it anymore as everyday language that i don't think alot of the time they realize what words they are using:):)

I agree with your reasoning Storms for the most part. The M*A*S*H example is a very valid one, but I am trying to figure out when the f word would be used to add a "profound effect" unlike other words such as S*OW. ;)
