I'm trying to understand this. On one hand, they are here, undocumented and performing necessary jobs for our economy. If we document them and require them to update their status then some of those problems are relieved. My problem is that it sets a terrible precedent and I am sure this will get other illegals to come hoping for the same treatment.

I'm trying to withhold full judgement, but I can't stand with Bush on this one.

they will never close the border. dems want illegals(sorry, undocumented persons) to come here to get there votes, and republicans are afraid they will lose hispanic votes. its all about vote buying, again at the taxpayers expense

Remember if they register they pay taxes. I'm not saying it's a great choice but the fact is that they are here.

Closing the borders is almost impossible. Anyone that thinks it is possible without bankrupting the economy just hasn't looked at the length of the borders and doesn't understand the man-power it would take to accomplish it.

I'm against it. Seems like a ploy to win the hispanic vote. He is catering to them like Jeb does in florida and he did as governor to texas. If he did this at some other point during the campaign i would have found it more generous. I am only against ILLEGAL immigration. Legal immigration is fine with me and is what this country is all about

Not a bad idea about the Mexican border, but what are we goig to do about the Canadian border? It is even more wide open than the Mexican border!!!! And the Canadians are not at all strict about who they let into their country!!! Think about it and relate it to terrorism and it becomes downright FREAKING SCARY!!!!!

I voted yes for it for one reason only. It does give us a way to track them and what they are doing, something we do not have now. It will do nothing to stem the flow of illegals into this country. That can only be accomplished by a wall along the borders with glass and razor wire on the top about 30' tall and tens of thousands of border patrol agents stationed at intervals along our borders. I'd rather be realistic and be able to track them than act like it isn't happening and go on about business like usual. Face it, out borders will not be closed anytime soon. BTW, if someone who is registered violates the law or quits working then I say HOME YOU GO!!!

you are right. another point. this will soon lead to republicans being unable to win the white house. california is now solid dem, and will onlt become more so. soon we can add arizona, nm, colo, nevada. and, as neal boortz has said, both parties will be outbidding each other for the hispanic vote. get the ATM card out.

High fences...electrified...plenty of warning signs alerting you to the possibilty of death should you touch...I just wonder if anybody has crunched the numbers to determine how much this one time expenditure would cost us vs the ever increasing costs of dealing with the illegals crossing the border, year after year after year.

Also...if we had an impermeable border, why would we even need border patrol except at the checkpoints??..where every Mexican would be forced to go through.

I don't think we could ever have an impermeable border just due to the fact that maintenance costs would be through the roof and i doubt we can maintain that if we can't even protect our border now.
