I've always felt that June in 1975 was a more powerful storm as it had a much better satellite presentation with a pinpoint (3 NM diameter) eye and a prefectly round large intense CDO at peak. The lowest H7 height measured in Tip was 1504m while in June it was 1486m (lowest ever at H7) and the eye temperature was a bit warmer. However, the measured a higher pressure in June simply because they couldn't get the drop in the center. The lowest pressure measured in June was 875mb under the inner edge of the eyewall which is hardly where you expect to find the lowest pressure of a storm.

3 nm Eye? Cripes. That's mind-boggling.
Did a quick google and all I found were some Typhoon June damage pics...are there any sat pics you are aware of on the web? (Barely any of Typhoon Tip, so I doubt there are any of June, unfortunately.)

I Talked to The Recon
crew that made that drop and they said that they couldn't turn inside the eye (the turning radius of a C-130 is on the order of 1-1/2 miles or so) without getting caught in the eyewall so they punched out the dropsonde as soon as they entered the eye on a straight across track and the momentum carried the sonde to the other side.
