Ahem! Aren't you forgetting about New England?
We haven't had a hurricane since Hurricane Bob in 1991. The longer without a hurricane, the more complacent we become.
Here are the named hurricanes that have struck New England. (I'll include Long Island for the heck of it).
Hurricane Carol 1953 (Category 1 landfall in Maine)
Hurricane Carol 1954 (Category 2; ranked Category 3 due to steering current)
Hurricane Edna 1954 (Category 2; ranked Category 3 due to low pressure and steering current)
Hurricane Donna 1960 (Category 2; ranked Category 3 due to steering current)
Hurricane Esther 1961 (did not make landfall, however moved close enough to bring Category 1 conditions to Rhode Island coast)
Hurricane Gerda 1969 (Category 2 landfall in Maine)
Hurricane Belle 1976 (Category 1 landfall)
Hurricane Gloria 1985 (Category 2 landfall; ranked Category 3 on Long Island due to low pressure and steering current)
Hurricane Bob 1991 (Category 2)
The last hurricane to strike Florida was Irene in 1999.
