When I was in my 30's I was at the dentists to have 2 impacted wisdom teeth removed. The dentist was highly upset when i insisted on local rather than general anistesia (bet I splled that wrong). He was mad.

All of this was occuring in an "open" area. I could plainly see the paitents waiting their turn. Problem was, THEY were out cold. It was me and the dentist. Imagine my HORROR when I witnessed him hopping up in the chair, with his KNEE braced on this guys CHEST trying to pull his tooth out! Good lord! I didn't get to see what happened to the rest of the sleeping people...I was next. The dentist acted like he was surprised to see me. Guess he forgot I wasn't going UNDER. And I'll tell ya what, I NEVER will.

Windsong -- I would think he'd be grateful that you only wanted local anesthesia. I had my wisdom teeth taken out with local and it saved the dentist and me a lot of trouble. He didn't have to monitor my vital signs since I wasn't being sedated intravenously and I didn't have to worry about being too dopey to drive home.

I actually have always loved going to the dentist because I'm obsessive about my teeth -- have been since I had braces. This story doesn't really scare me since the dentist usually just peeks around at each tooth and dictates his findings to the hygenist, who writes it in my chart, and then she's the one who spends the most time actually working IN my mouth.

I know it's said that truth is stranger than fiction but this story is so outlandish and disgusting that I can't help but think to myself, "This sounds like another one of those urban legends".

Please, someone tell me this didn't really happen. PLEASE.

At least, you didn't suffer under a BUTCHER who decided, when I was but 42, that ALL of my teeth needed to be extracted, and did so within a three-day bloodfest (to get the insurance, which we had at that time, I guess) under utterly inadequate local "anaesthesia".

As if this was not enough, he fitted me for dentures within three weeks (the gums had barely healed), and subsequent relining has NEVER worked. The last time I was in, I was told that, IF I had insurance, I'd be a prime candidate for implants.

Meanwhile, I've been swallowing my food almost whole for the past ten years...

Well, it's not on Snopes yet. Give it at least a week (usually less). It will either be validated or proven false.

I've been following this since it was first posted.....and I share the disgust of most replies.

Unfortunately, it's probably true......it reminds me of something I heard a few years back where they caught an anesthesiologist doing "funny little movements" by the patients head..........you guessed it........he thought he could get away with it because everyone was so busy and wouldn't notice..........Argh!....p

That's just it GalvestonDuck, there wasn't any monitoring going on either! Those people were sedated by the dentist and then once in awhile, some little girl from the front would go through and look at everybody....then the dentist came out and did a production line thing from chair to chair. This was back in 1977 in Springfield Mass and when I insisted on being awake he was NOT happy. Probably because he WASN'T taking proper precautions in the first place. I was young and dumb and didn't realize till a long time later how it SHOULD have been done.
