The Coming Tornado Season

I agree with you on that long range forecasting. The only type of long range forecasting such as that for any other type of weather besides hurricanes are the ones found with the climate prediction center. I may make a post later on looking at all of these maps... Otherwise you can check em' out for yourself.

I live in metro KC and have spent all of my life here. I can recall in the mid 1970s when local police cars went up and down the streets warning people. I believ e we gout our local tornado siren in the early '80s.

The last tornado warning we had in our area was last July. The tornado siren less than a block from my house went off at 3 AM. It's pretty frightening to be woke up to a tornado warning. The closest I have come to seeing a tornado was an F0 (unconfimed) funnel (It damaged rooftops and treetops) cut a path directly to my west by haff a block. That was in June 2001.

The typical severe weather season here in KC is from April 15th to July 15th. We also have a short season in September and October.

We can have severe weather at any time of the year here tho.

About the same here up I-29 in Omaha. Back when I was just getting into weather (oh, about kindergarten in the mid to late 80s ) I always thought that severe weather could not happen in the winter or fall. Late March through July is the time to watch out.

The late 90s, though, I begin to realize when conditions are just right, severe weather will happen, and no, weather does not care about the calendar.

Looking through the records of storm events from the CPC, I found some interesting stuff for my area:

In DECEMBER 1975 (which was also the year of the May 6 Tornado that hit Omaha), southeast Nebraska had a few fairly strong tornadoes. In DECEMBER!

In January 1992, out near Nebraska's "tornado alley" (Grand Island/Hastings), there were several F2 (F3?) tornadoes reported. In the dead of winter!

More recently, in November 2003, there was a F0-F1 tornado near the Nebraska City area.

The only month that Nebraska has not seen a tornado anywhere in its 75,000 Square miles is FEBRUARY!

Of course tornadoes can occur anytime, virtually any season, but the ingredients needed are confined to different areas during different seasons.

During my 50 years in north central Illinois, the tornado season was at greatest risk from early April through the first two weeks of June.

There have been notable exceptions even there, however. Plainfield, IL, comes to mind.
