DO WE HAVE LIFT-OFF?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

That is what we are trying to control. The repetition of threads about a same theme. And also that is why we created new forum for the experts to post their anaylisis there because that will get lost down the pages when as you said things turn very active.

I don't really recall that happening much when the season is very busy. And, on the other hand, part of the reason for coming to S2K is to post and be enthusiastic about the tropics. If only a few can post, then not many will visit the forum, I'm afraid.

We meteorlogical nitwits can post here to our hearts' content. We can post in the Tropical Analysis forum as well, just not start a thread there. It's great that there's a separate forum for the really informed folks to start topics because there are a lot of folks who post here that know just enough of the lingo to come off as if they understand what they're communicating, making forecasts, and they're really doing nothing more than trying to make up an explanation as to why the storm will go the direction they want it to go, whether that's towards them (most cases), or away from them. People read those things and become confused; some even panic. I remember last year some girl was on one of those radio things they do here and had read some WAG someone had posted on here. There was really no meteorological support for the WAG the landfall "forecast" the girl had read. She was in panic...

Folks seek out these types of sites when storms threaten them. Some folks, I'm sure like me, are abnormally frightened by them while at the same time, fascinated with them. The addition of a "pro" section, if you will, was a great decision. It provides a place people can go when they want to know what REALLY is going on, while this section allows all the buffs, wannabes and numbskulls [self included] to post away to their hearts' content.

Yeah that was a good idea to start that analysis forum! One can go there & get good non bias info regarding tropical systems & it won't get lost in the flood of threads like cycloneye stated. That forum is going to be worth its weight in gold come prime season.

I agree the "expert" forum is a good idea -- that way the rest of us can post on Talking Tropics. After all, this forum is not an official NHC site i.e. this is not brain surgery. It's for those who love all aspects of weather and most particularly, the tropics.

I think some of you are getting the wrong idea. The forum wasn't created to make anyone look stupid and everyones post are welcome on S2K. The only stupid question is one thats not asked. Even our "experts" don't know everything. Noboby is perfect and everyone, no matter how much they think they know can always learn something

Thank you, rainband, thank you, thank you, thank you. A few redundant posts will not make or break S2K. Rather keep the enthusiasm than smother it.

Might be fun sometime to see how the expert forecasts compare to those of the peons during the season. :)

May "blobs" come and go sometimes

#28 Postby Weatherboy1 » Fri May 13, 2005 3:26 pm

It seems like I can recall a similar blob forming in the same area last May, a little noise being made about it, but then, shear killed it. I definitely remember this happening in 1999 as well ... My wife and I went to Islamorada in the FL Keys for a weekend and the blob was enough to spark a Special Tropical Disturbance Statement. Same thing happened however ... it moved N and NE, got caught up in shear and exited quickly over Cuba/Haiti and into the Atlantic without developing into anything. I suspect something similar will happen this time around.
