The 1928 Lake Okeechobee Hurricane

I just finished reading a book on this storm. It's called "Killer Cane - The Deadly Hurricane of 1928" by Robert Mykle. Great read!

I read this book also; it's a great (but horrific) story. My wife grew up in South Bay (right on the southern tip of the lake, and I had heard so much about this storm that I went out and bought the book to learn what I could about it.

It was a disaster when the levees broke, and although it's a different situation, it drives home the problems with New Orleans' location and vulnerable levees.

Fast forward three-quarters of a century to 2004. Hurricane Jeanne aftermath:



This is a pic of our old bank, Big Lake National Bank, on S Parrott Ave. No where near as bad as the '28 storm, but it still pains us to see our favorite town at anything less than 100%.

Despite the damage, that looks like a beautiful bank. I love big front porches, and you don't often see them on businesses.

Thats good to hear that the Levees held. I wondered about that due to the storm surges that destroyed much of the property on the Lake, plus the 25 foot waves

I've been looking into this storm alot lately & needless to say it was quite an event.I would love to see those pics you spoke of!!But theyre your ex-husband's so I won't hold my breath. 

No problem Cyclonaut. We are a dysfuntional, dysfuntional family. Still friends! Spent every holiday together with our kids since we separated 17 years ago.. He even gave me a vaction to Hawaii to see my oldest daughter and grandchildren as a graduation gift when I finish SFCC.
