For pre-K-12 in Palm Beach County, the teachers began last Wednesday , and students begin this Wednesday. The last day of classes is the last weekday of May.
Perhaps one reason for the early start date but relatively late end date is that in addition to the "regular" federal holidays, spring break, winter break, this county also takes off Good Friday ("spring holiday"), Yom Kippur, and Rosh Hashannah ("fall holidays"), a reflection of the predominant religions in this area.
Personally, I teach college (part-time) year-round on a quarter system, with ~10 day breaks between terms (a bit longer in December).

Local County schools started Thursday August 4th, City Schools started Friday August 5th here. The reasons being the schools are under strict guidelines for 180 school days. State testing is right before Christmas and the first part of May so therefore they start early in oder to get the most "teaching days" before state testing in December and then start the new semester in January instead of having tests after Christmas/New Year Vacation. I too remember starting the Tuesday after Labor Day and getting out around in the middle of May...what happened to the good ole days??????
State Colleges in MS start August 23 and 24th....so basically the same thing, just a little later.
But there are added holidays in the local public schools...3 days for Mardi Gras (which I will say are removed if for some reason they can't go to school one day, i.e. hurricane, flood) and as has been mentioned "teacher days"...what the heck is a teacher day??? oh I know..they go to class and learn new techniques..but to take a day off during the school year to do this? Oh well......must be nice to be a teacher
I wouldn't do it for any amount of money

Down here, school started today, which is the earliest ever for Dade County.
The trend is because a lot of the people on this forum come from the southeast, where school start way too early. Here just to the west of DC, we go back Aug 29 (we always go the monday before Labor Day). It's the latest we can go back, and for once DC will actually start the same day as us. I think this is they're earliest start in recent memory.
