But I know down in Hilton Head the attitude is that they haven't been hit in 100 years and they are protected somehow.

Think I'll call my parents down there and see what they are doing and make sure they are preparing.

That's a very wise idea. I personally believe there's a very good chance Ophelia will become a major hurricane (cat-3) before landfall.....and there's a high likelyhood landfall will occur somewhere between St Simons Island, GA and Myrtle Beach.

Okay, so I called my mom and asked her if she was getting ready for a hurricane. She said, "No, why?"

 So I filled her in. I still don't think she thinks anything will hit there. I heard my dad in the background saying he saw the news and didn't see any threat to them.

Parents

Moral of the story is: A hurricane bearing down on your vicinity= GET OUT. Live to fight another day.

Veteran of: Andrew, David, Irene, Charley, Frances, Jeanne (lived in different places, and got the full experience from all of them).

Also, in 1964 Dora affected our area in a tremendous way. There are streets on old maps that aren't there any more , since Dora visited. And there was an article in the paper a while back about people still paying taxes on the land in hopes that it would return. It is in the ocean, and I can't imagine the ocean receding. Along one part of the beach, in the line of rocks, there are old bricks and chuncks of foundations of houses that were washed away.We have very low land around here, and are not familliar with what a hurricane could bring simlply because we have been spared for so long. Another reason is that a lot of the people here are not from here.Best advice...listen to the emergency management officials, and go early so you won't be stuck in traffic.
