How come Cantori is not in the keys

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Wasn't it Mike Watkins a while back who said he had met Jim after Katrina hit, and Jim's experience with the storm left him a changed man? Does anyone know more about what happened to him during Katrina?

I remember seeing him interview the guy who was in charge of the shelter they were going to report from during the storm. It was some old VFW home, maybe, something like that. He was talking about how rock-solid the old building was and how they had a well-stocked dining room for all their needs, very convivial.

And then to read the blog entry upthread that says the TWC producer was on the second floor of this building with the water still rising there, and that they'd switched into survival mode...it must have been chaos. It sounds like all their provisions and supplies were on the first floor. I also think they had some special needs people there who probably had to be carried upstairs.

Wonder if this will be a future "Storm Stories."

I heard a man last night say that he's not leaving NO because he doesn't believe the safety warnings. He said "all the news people are here and they wouldn't be here if it was that dangerous" I feel the same way when I see weather people on the coast before an approaching storm -- especially before Katrina. I remember the CNN newsman downtown NO after the entire city had been ordered to evacuate just before the storm.

The problem with that is alot of people don't use common sense if they chose to ride out a storm. Example being walking around before the storm is over or driving thier cars, staying in mobile homes, ect..... So this reporters are trained to know what to expect and can usually handle it well. I haven't heard of a reporter getting killed while out reporting on a hurricane, but I have heard of others not heding the evacuation orders and not live to tell the story. And as we just saw with Cantore, even the best trained are caught off gaurd. I see where you are coming from with the comment I have thought about it too, but please don't think that way. If you are told to leave do so!!!

Some of the reporters might be trained as meteorologists. Most of them I see are idiots with microphones. They try to "play up" the storm by trying to get dramatic wind shots (usually betwee two tall buildings serving as a wind tunnel). During Katrina a couple of them were running down the street, hiding behind mail boxes and cars like they were in combat. I guess when a board or shingle takes someone's head off on video, we will have more prudent reporters in the field. Then again, maybe not.......
