No offense....But keeping four 5 gallon gas containers in your garage or especially in your car is EXTREMELY dangerous. That is not a solution and could possibly put yourself and your family in even more danger. *even with certified containers* Although gasoline is not as flammable as oxygen, the dangers with those amounts you mentioned are real.

What *is* the safest storage method?
Between hurricane season and Nor'easters I always keep some around for the generator. Need it to pump water- have a well.

I went to a friends house in Meyerland today and I was amazed at how little there was in the way of branches down over there. Here in Sharpstown we had lots of branches down and the next door neighbor's tree blew halfway down, narrowly missing my car. We now have huge piles of downed tree branches sitting outside all of the houses. We were without power for only about 2 1/2 hours. This was fortunate because after Alicia, we were without power for 2 weeks.
I was going to go back to my little apartment in NW Harris County today, but have since decided to wait until either after dark or early tomorrow so I can spare my cats having to sit in my un-airconditioned car in this 102 degree heat.
Glad y'all are coming back and thanks for the company, support and advice, especially from my fellow Hou/Galvers!
And somehow I REALLY think we need to have an "End-of-Hurricane-season-party" this year!!

I'm back and believe me "Home never looked so good"! My back fence was blown down, but other then that no damage. I used the clips and plywood to cover all my window. Great way to go, they went up fast and easy and came down the same. Glad to hear that so many from the area are safe and sound.

The gas situation has taught me that I will be buying four 5 gallon gas containers that will be filled well in advance of a bonafied threat so I will have gas for evacuation(if needed)past the full tank I already had. I have learned that I will have proper boarding prepared beforehand, even though we really didn't need it this time. We did board up some windows, but not like they should have been. Even though I may never have to use it, I may still go out and buy a generator.
I am just so glad that as best we can tell, all of our Houston area posters seem to have come through the experience in good shape. Even Kelly in Beaumont is ok even though she doesn't know what kind of shape her house is in.

No offense taken. I am a former volunteer firefighter. I know all about those dangers. Those containers won't be filled until I think there is a bonafied threat and my garage has no ignition sources in it except for lights. Normally, if those are filled they will be strapped to the top of my vehicle which still can't fit in my filled with useless crap garage(which got at least half of it cleaned out today!).
