It looks like it's the surge toppnig a levy and not just a shear wall of water like in the tsunami videos. Look at the chain link fence on the left side of the pic...you can see how it climbs up towards the height of the surge. On the right side of the pic it looks as if the surge has already eaten away most of the levy.

Levee breech...but you can also tell the levees were being overrun too. That levee is probably 14 ft or more. Water heights in St. Bernard were as high as 18 ft because I have seen pictures of people's sheds and boats on their roofs left there by falling water.

Yes, that is one of the breaches on the levee that runs through St. Bernard Parish. This particular levee contains the water within the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MRGO). BTW, this deep-water canal, and its levees, has been the target of much discussion over the years (it's 40+ years old) in regard to the level of protection it would offer in a hurricane's surge. I guess those who were talking truly did know what was going to happen...
It is for this reason that major storms approaching N.O. on the WEST side (as opposed to Katrina's landfall east of the city) may be significantly more destructive, not only in some of those lower parishes, but also in river neighborhoods of N.O. proper like Uptown, Garden District, etc. In that case, those southerly winds would bring the Gulf right up the river.
That is definitely cascading water sliding over/through the levee, and hence, why St. Bernard (and bfez
) ended up in such bad shape... If I'm not mistaken, I believe this is the breach that was possibly caused by (or as a contributing factor) a run-a-way barge.
