Wonder what this will mean to the political situation. The Israelis elected the butcher of Beruit to start tough with the Palestinians, but the radicals have deserted Sharon. Peace in the middle east will remain elusive.

Topsy turvy times.

A lack of new info within the last few hours. I think this deserves more coverage. There are so many angles to this story that aren't being reported.

I was just thinking the same... I was expecting a LOT more coverage.

It's been at least 4-5 hours that he's been in surgery now... it was supposed to take 3 hours.

Fox News just reported he's half paralyzed after surgery...

Edit to add: The physican just left without commenting... it's 5:47am in Jerusalem now. Cabinet meeting will take place in 2-3 hours. Any announcement of something would probably be after that.

MSNBC has reports that he survived the surgery...apparently some kind of statement is coming at :45 after(just after sunrise in Jerusalem).

Edit: AFP - Sharon has been returned to the operating table for more emergency surgery, according to Israeli public television. :( More bleeding in the brain... not good.

The importance of this to the world is paramount. The Palestinians might jump and dance after his death (for a variety of reasons, not all of them stupid) but they will not be better for it. Sharon did the biggest gamble, in my opinion, by pulling out of Gaza, and there is a group in Israel who are extremists and want not only Gaza back as a buffer but in fact the cultral colonization of Gaza and conquered territories to continue. Sharon looked at the possibility of Israel being a pariah state for continued violations of international law and decided that peace was worth surrendering a bit of Israel's strategic interests, which was brave and not something any yahoo could try as Prime Minister. His party broke over the issue, and the new party he formed... who knows what will come of it.

In essence, both types of people on both sides of the conflict will be happy if Sharon is out of the picture. Ultranationalists in Israel, and the usual assortment in Palestine.

A hospital spokesman said that Prime Minister Sharon's hemorrhage has stopped, and added that Sharon had been moved into intensive care. The official said that Sharon has vital signs, but is still in serious condition.

I pray and hope that he'll be able to recover for the most part as no one is ever 100% again after one of these...prayers and thoughts for him in his post-operative period and for later on as he begins physical therapy.

While, I feel for him, he wasn't in the greatest of shape. I believe his health was detiorating anyway. If, and only if, he pulls through this, he will no longer be able to perform his duties. I thinketh Netanyahoo will take over and then we will have chaos. Anyways, I hope all is well.

Ehud Olmert can be acting PM for 100 days, after that an election must take place.

Iran's President is totally Insane-and extremely Dangerous. OTOH, he's not the only one making crackpot statements. That Tolerant, Forgiving and Loving Christian Preacher Pat Robertson (PUKE!!) also opened his mouth before engaging his Brain in commenting about Sharon.

Iran's President is whacked... this isn't the first crazy insane thing he's said either. If he doesn't stop it, he's going to find his country under attack. :x

and I am flat out sick and tired of Pat Robertson's drivel.
