They never made peopel pay for 911 calls, as far as I know. The problem was that when you dialed 911 from their network, you could end up with 911 anywhere in the country.

They have fixed that by making you register for 911 service when you get your Vonage box. You tell it which county 911 center to call when you dial 911 from your box.

We just had to sign a agreement about the 911 calls or they would cut off service. It was just to let customers know that if they moved their modem to another address without thier knowledge and you dialed 911 the address of where the modem was previously would come up as where you are calling from. Basically saying don't move your modem, or they may have the wrong address of where you have the emergency and may cause problems with them getting to you. Makes sense.

Given that I spend about 200 per month between cable and phone (I don't own a cell phone) Would I be saving money if I dropped Bell South (between 80 and 90 per month) and got either Brighthouse digital phone or Vonage, and a Cell phone (which I would have relatively minimal use of, but would need if the cable connection was down for any reason)?

You would definitley be saving money on your home phone, cable, and internet together. As far as a cell, I don't know. I never had a cell till Christmas and have been on this plan since the summer. It has never went down to the point of needing another phone. Power has never been off either. I guess that would be a personal decision on weather to get a cell or not as a back up. I don't think it is needed, but again if you have problems with power outages where you live then you may want a cell. You have a back up battery pack for your modem but I think it only last a day or so. My bill is 151.23 every month flat. I also saved about 50 bucks a month by switching and I am very happy with it. I go through Bright House it is the all in one package, you get road runner, digital cable, and phone for that price, which I think is a great deal. And there is no hidden charges, and it's all on 1 bill which I like. Something to think about.

I have to get with my landlord because the Apartment Office phone and my apartment are sharing 2 BellSouth phone lines.....the former owners of the complex used to live in my Apt. and the office is connected.

I've got Vonage..and it's ok...but nothig to rave about. You have to be relatively close to base with your handset or static is a problem. For the money though, it's a decent deal.

I have digital phone but as I said it is through Road Runner(Bright House), not Vonage. And I do not have that problem at all. I have to cordless phones and can take them anywhere inside or outside without problem. :D

This sounds like a problem with your phone, and not Vonage.

*Sigh....our Doc at the office has a big idea about using
Vonage to run the phone(s) at the office. BellSouth went
up on rates, he got mad. Disconnected. Went to MCI. Now,
MCI is going up on rates. He thinks that he can run the office...
...just maybe with Vonage. I'm skeptical, and, wincing
at the idea after things I've read. Running a Doctor's Office
on Vonage....any thoughts on that?

Thanks OTown. Power outages aren't really a problem where I currently live (MetroWest) but sometimes my Modem goes out for a little while, then turns back on. I have Earthlink High Speed Internet through Bright House Networks.
