Ones I can remember:

Hurricane Earl (98)- our first named storm after we moved to Florida, and pretty much a bust.
Hurricane Georges (98)- Okay, we were far enough away from the center that it wasn't too bad, but still way more intense than Earl. Watched the cops come out and answer a truly Springeresque domestic violence incident in the parking lot across the street from our apartment complex despite TS force winds.
TS Helene (00)- called my Mom because my apartment building showed up on the 'storm moves ashore' clips than Headline News was using. Other than that, pretty wimpy.
TS Barry (01)- Slept through landfall, as did my parents, who were in town to help us work on the house
TS Bonnie (04)- Meh. Got a good amount of wind coming from the north though, and it was cool to go down to the beach and see how far out the wind was pushing the water away from the shore.
Hurricane Ivan (04)- we ended up in the sweet spot, so to speak. The worst of the winds were west of us, the worst of the tornadoes were to the east of us. Constant howling winds all through the night, and we felt like one of us had to be up at all times to monitor for tornado warnings for the area.

We were one of the 2% of homes in the area that never lost power in the storm (hurrah for over-engineered German subdivisions) and it was eerie to stay tuned into the local broadcasters as the radio stations went off the air one by one, and WEAR got to a point at about 3am where they were saying on the air that they'd been told that their tower had gone too, and their signal was going out on only the one or two remaining radio stations and that they didn't think anyone out there could see them right now. But we did because cable on their end stayed active, and our cable never went out either (hurrah for over-engineered German subdivisions).

Had one of those wimpy shortleaf pines bounce off our roof, and the only damage was a slightly ruffled ridge vent. After the storm, we had the remaining shortleaf pines in our yard whacked because it seemed like most of them were now leaning precariously.

Dennis (05)- Evacuated to Jacksonville because we didn't want to go through another Ivan. Knew it was all going to be okay when CNN was broadcasting during the storm from and outdoor shopping mall near my house.

Katrina (05)- got a day off from work, and tuned into the Mobile tv stations in order to watch it all fall apart further west of us. I remember flipping over to the national news channels, and even in the early hours after landfall thinking that the nationals were massively underreporting just how bad it really was out there

Rita (05)- was supposed to do a triathlon at Pensacola Beach that weekend, but the race got changed to a 5K because of unsafe surf and sand blowing over the bike course. Has my eyeballs scarred for life because too many men showed up wearing thinly-lined split side running shorts, and when you've got 30mph winds with gusts to 45mph, then the shorts blow to the side, and I really didn't want to see those packages, guys.

**I am only including history from 95' onward (as they are more recent and easier to remember).**

Hurricane Erin (1995) = I was inland in Orlando and can remember seeing many tree limbs down as well as scattered light debris. Was not too serious. I think top gusts recorded at the airport were near 70mph (if even) and I lived north of there.

TS Jerry (1995) = Was very weak. No real damage.

Hurricane Dennis (1999) = Experienced him as a TD in central north Carolina. No damage.

Hurricane Floyd (1999) = Though the eyewall passed well to the east of Raleigh, NC...I still got strong outerbands and gusts to 60-65mph. One outerband was strong enough to uproot a tall oak tree and a fence in my backyard at the time.

Hurricane Gabrielle (2001) = Gabrielle was a TS by the time it reached me in Oviedo, FL. I had wind gusts to 50mph at my house. The only damage I saw was a small tree that was slightly bent and a few downed branches.

TS Henri (2003)= Was extremely weak. It was only a TD when it reached me in Winter Park, FL. It was pretty much just a 20 minute rain event with a few 15-25mph gusts.

Hurricane Charley (2004) = Worst storm I have ever been in (went through the eyewalls). I had Cat. 1 force winds with gust to Cat. 2 (and a few areas saw tornadoes and microburst with Cat. 3 force gusts near my area). I was a good 75-100 miles inland from Charley's landfall point also. It was insane. I was without power and water for well over a week. Many large oaks downed and many homes lost most of their shingles or whole sections of their roofing. The wind was also strong enough to bend and buckle large billboard signs and shatter glass.

Hurricane Frances (2004) = Frances was a massive storm and a slow mover. I was a good ways inland and north of her landfall but I still got 70mph gusts. We had TS force winds from Frances for 24-36+ hrs. and a steady rain for a good 48 hrs. It was miserable. I never lost power during the storm though...and the damage was overall just minor.

Hurricane Jeanne (2004) = Jeanne, like Frances was slow and massive. Jeanne also made landfall in the same spot as Frances. Jeanne was a little stronger though, and gusts to 80mph occured in my area. This was enough to knock out power for a few days and knock down some trees and branches. Pretty bad storm.

Hurricane Dennis (2005) = Dennis passed well west of my area in Central FL, but even where I was I had gusts to 40-45mph. This was enough to make it feel quite windy and to blow around light debris.

Hurricane Rita (2005) = Hurricane Rita was my first storm in Texas. Rita luckily made landfall to my east, but in north Houston gusts to 60-70mph still occured. This was enough to bend a backyard palm tree, blow down many leaves and branches and even knock down a few trees and signs. Power was out for 1-2 days due to Rita...but it could have been a lot worse.

..Now the question is WHAT WILL 06' BRING???..

1) Bertha- Moderate damage around my area, gusty winds and rainfall
2) Edouard- Just waves
3) Bonnie- See Bertha
4) Floyd- See Bertha
5) Isabel- This one we were pretty afraid of. 5 days out, some forecasts were further north than North Carolina, including one that hit Cape May. Preparation was insane, though upon coming through we only got some gusty winds.

Isabel had me on edge for a short bit too, I was a little worried, then excited when it came, it was a fun day, 55mph gusts

1976 Belle (I lived in CT and this was my first hurricane experience..though I think she was actually down to a TS by the time it moved inland)

I have lived in the same house in Seminole County, FL (about 20 miles N of Orlando) since 1977 (except for a short stint in Daytona). Here's the storms that had some effect on my area:

1979 David -- The first storm that impacted Florida since I moved here. We got winds gusting to 55mph and a few limbs down

1981 Dennis -- This s-l-o-o-o-w moving tropical storm took more than 2 days to cross Florida. Winds were not severe, but flooding was bad

1983 Barry -- Weakened to a depression before making landfall on the Space Coast. No more than an afternoon thundershower

1984 Isidore -- This tropical storm packed quite a punch. We had winds in the 50 mph range for several hours

1985 Elena -- My first evacuation from a hurricane..I was celebrating my 1st wedding anniversary in Clearwater, FL and was evacuated at 1am when Elena unexpectedly swerved toward Florida's west coast. The drive on I-4 to Orlando took over 8 hours (normally 90 min). Inland effects: squalls with quite a few tornadoes causing bad damage

1985 Juan -- Juan's final landfall was near Pensacola, but this storm's effects were far-reaching. Central Florida experienced severe squalls with a number of tornadoes

1988 Keith -- A fairly unremarkable tropical storm

1990 Marco -- just some rain squalls as the storm moved up the west coast of Florida

1992 Andrew -- Andrew never affected Central Florida, but I spent some time down in Miami assisting the Red Cross. The devastation was unbelievable...I have quite a bit of video footage from then.

1994 Gordon -- Lucky me, I was living in Daytona when Gordon did his loop-de-loop, striking Florida twice. We received over 15 inches of rain in Daytona with terrible flooding. This was one of my first "storm chasing" adventures, where I drove around town with the video camera recording the flooding and 45mph winds

1995 Erin -- Another adventure driving around with the video camera. Inland, we got about 50-55mph gusts....

1995 Jerry -- minimal tropical storm .... nothing to remember

1998 Mitch -- A far cry from the Cat 5 monster in the Caribbean, Mitch crossed over us while transitioning to an extratropical storm. We got windy squally weather...no damage

1999 Floyd -- My first BIG hurricane scare. This one was supposed to bring winds in excess of 100 mph into the Orlando area, but thankfully, Floyd turned north sooner than expected. We got winds of about 50 mph from the outer bands.

1999 Irene -- just some squalls to Tropical Storm strength..nothing remarkable

2001 Gabrielle -- another squally day with minimal tropical storm strength gusts

2002 Edouard -- Another storm that weakened to a depression as it made landfall near Daytona....minimal effects

2003 Henri -- Yet another one that was a mere depression as it passed over

2004 Charley -- My "BIG ONE" by far. Winds at my house, which went through the eyewall, gusted to over 100mph and a central pressure of 28.91. All the numerous near misses and "duds" outlined above left me completely complacent and I did not prepare at all for Charley. Damage to my property was extensive (roof damage, ceiling collapse & backyard fence destroyed) I am still digging out today from that mess.

2004 Frances -- Needless to say, the house was boarded up tight for Frances, after living through Charley. Damage was minimal, but we still had winds gusting over hurricane force at my house. This storm provided another one of my video escapades driving around town.

2004 Jeanne -- After Frances and the early threat Ivan posed, the boards just stayed up all through September. Jeanne was very similar to Frances in its effects, though Frances was a much more prolonged event. Once again, winds at my house gusted over hurricane force. Rains from Jeanne caused a major collapse of the creekbed behind my property, causing my entire pool deck and half my in-the-ground pool to collapse into the creek. Damage from the 3 storms totalled over $30,000. Insurance paid a whopping $1,300.

2005 Arlene -- Arlene spread squally weather over all of Florida as it passed west of the state...no damage

2005 Dennis -- very similar to Arlene, we experienced windy, squally weather as the hurricane moved through the Gulf

2005 Wilma -- The worst of the 2005 storms for Florida. We were far enough north to escape the hurricane force winds. Maximum gusts were about 55-60mph
