It would not suprize me if this was one of those under water super volcano's ready to blow. Which will make a 500 foot tsunumi!

If a large quake did occur in this area, the results could not only be devastating to the Caribbean but do Katrina-surge type damage across the East Coast. No supervolcanoes, but a massive tsunami like the one in E. Asia in 2004.

I am going to be on a cruise in about a week which takes me to Labadee (on the north side of Hispanola; and is farily close to that area). All I can say is that if a major quake strikes and a large tsunami is generated...I WILL NOT be in a very good place for both feeling the quake and then for the after affects (Tsunami)! Let's hope nothing happens.

Over 7.0 of ricther scale would cause a big tsunami.

No set number is the magic number for 30 feet of water into any one city. The tsunamalgic (sp?) effect on a particular city cannot be determined even when a quake does occur, and its magnitude is know. So much is based on the precise depth and location of the quake, what kind of materials make up the crust in the area around the quake, and then the topography of the ocean floor also has an effect on the size and direction of the wave. And you must also consider the fact that these cities all have relatively deep water just a short ways off shore, and thus big waves are more common in these cities when compared to cities with a lot of continental shelf just off the coast, such as cities like Savannah and NYC, which recieve amplified surge from storm systems, but cannot be impacted by extremely large waves.

In general, nothing shy of 6.0 at the very least (IMHO).

Matt,

geologically this area is more like the Indian Ocean subduction zone that snapped last Christmas.

luis stay safe ok man? Get in a door jam or under something heavy if it really gets a-rumbling---then when its done RUN RUN RUN from the coast!

Well the USGS says that about 1.3 million quakes occur every year if you go all the way down to the lower level on the scale. 13,000 per annum if you look at 4-4.9. more like 130,000 in the range of these; we've even had 2 that have been reported around our area in the last month, one being in the 5 range, but well offshore.

I go with Aslkahuna's post that this is probably not indicative of any impending calamity as their is an active fault area in the Caribbean. Do you have any data suggesting this number of these low-end quakes constitutes a major anomoly for this area--I ask this in all sincerity as with stats like that I'd just like to know.

EWG: I envy you--only got one cruise when I went with my senior class in 2001, went to Bahamas, St. Maartens, St. John, and S. Croix, absolutely the greatest time of my life--had a ball. Have a great time, I don't think ol Neptune's ready to let one rip just yet!

http://redsismica.uprm.edu/english/seis ... 102001.php

Above is the event of october 2001 at the Sombrero fault which is located at the Anegada passage between Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands almost in the area the actual event is occuring. The difference from the 2001 event to the actual 2006 first days of March one is that the quakes for the most part were stronger than the actual event.

I think the others are off the edge of the map and aren't being counted.
