My Dad was in World War II and was with Patton when he crossed the Rein River. He was also in the Red Ball Express. He didn't tell many stories because it made him too sad as his father and grandfather had come over from Germany and he felt like he was probably fighting his cousins at times. He actually said he was face to face with a German soldier that looked just like himself and had to kill him before he was killed, he said both of them just stood there and stared at each other for what seemed like forever. The horrible part is that he was at Auschwitz and saw all the piles of dead bodies (bones). We have pictures that he took off a dead soldier there, they are heart breaking.

He passed away in 1998 and is buried at Biloxi National Cemetery and thank goodness he wasn't washed away with Katrina, even though he probably would have liked the ride :) my dad was a hoot!

My father was an FC3, 18 years old, third class assigned to the Navy repair ship, Vestal, and was actually a survivor of two ships during the Pearl Harbor attacks. Just two days prior, on Dec. 5th, the Vestal had anchored by the battleship Arizona to do routine repair work. Shortly before 6 am, on Dec. 7th, he was topside the Vestal. At 6 am the Vestal was the first ship to take a hit during the attack, blowing him off the Vestal onto the Arizona. A second blast aboard the Arizona blew him off the battleship into the water. He boarded the Vestal once more as she was moved from the Arizona. His records lists 87 documented air raids in the Pacific Theater with ll major campaign ribbons.

This per an article written about him. I hope I have the dates right, the print is very small and hard for me to read.

I am so proud.
