Good topic point about not assuming a season is dead because of a slow start, but please note that the Caribbean water temperatures are running near normal. Also, on the correlation stuff, note that the only time that there is a worthwhile correlation in seasonal activity is when there is a June or July storm forming south of 22N and east of 77W. Otherwise, the correlation of early to late season storms is statistically insignificant, per Goldenberg. That study is, also, quite dated.

It's a shallow body of water, so tropical cyclones have short-term effect on water temperatures.
