A violation of the Geneva Conventions and nothing is being done. No wonder those that hate us do what they do. We have become softies.

This is simply another tactic they are using to buy time to complete the assembly of bombs. I think everyone knows why the Brits being held are reading the garbage they are spouting. Better to read the garbage than have one of your friends have his head chopped off. I saw a program today from Iran which was probably old where they had a public execution of a young sixteen year old girl hung from a crane. Apparently she had been assaulted but they blamed her for being immoral., and the supreme court found her guilty. It was extremely difficult to watch.

""The president will explain Iran's view on ... the British forces' illegal entry into Iranian waters and the British government's adopted policy regarding the issue," state television said."

What he says will be pretty important.

I have said before that I don't believe the British are taking a strong enough attitude on this. I think that right from the point when the British government knew that the sailors weren't in Iranian waters there should have been a deadline imposed, with the threat of military action if it was not complied with. Appeasment never got anyone anywhere.

A "gift"? Wonder what the British gave him in exchange...

Glad this is over, but that wording was strange.

Bomb them!!

It seems that we didn't have to, which is good. Thousands of lives saved. Strategic interests maintained. Today will be a good day.

I'm wondering if behind the scenes the UK was tough but allowed them to save face with announcing it this way.

Its quite possible. Krushchev allowed us to 'win' the Cuban Missile Crisis even though we withdrew nuclear weapons from Turkey. We allowed the Pakistanis to keep the fact we threatened them with war and destruction after 9/11 private, until Musharaff decided to disclose the confrontation. Yes, the United States evidently called up the Pakistanis and told them they would either join us in the fight against the Taliban and Al Qae'ada or be bombed back to the stone age. We told this to a nuclear power.

It wouldn't surprise me if the British played hardball behind the scenes. This is clearly not going to be seen as an Iranian victory anywhere except for Iran. The Arab world doesn't like the British but their governments are becoming increasingly disturbed by Iran.

That is not how one conducts diplomacy and has one's word taken seriously in the international scene. There is nothing the British could do which would weaken their support as much as that.

Hmmmm...Taking British soliders and holding them as hostages doesn't sound very diplomatic..

Negotiating for their release and achieving it is diplomatic.

This should clear things up a lot on what nations do under these circumstances:
