My friend is there and I'm extremely worried, I don't really know how to interpret these maps, but it looks bad. I don't know how high above sea level he is, but I just need someone with more experience to verify that he's in severe danger so I can convince him to evacuate. Please help

He's in the red zone (Category 1). Do whatever you can to get him out of there.

Also, remind him of the mandatory evacuation order for his area: http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/CountyExecutive/NewsRelease/2012/10-28-2012b.html He is way south of the line on Sunrise Highway. He needs to get out while the roads are still open. Ask him for his SS number and names of family members. When he asks why, tell him you want to be able to ID him and inform next of kin.

The center of Hurricane Sandy is marked by , I think landfall will occur just south of Atlantic City (Only my opinion, listen to the NWS and the NHC for official info).

I'm in Red Bank, NJ and we still have power. Maybe some gusts in the 50mph range, but that's it. A lot of people in this area are asking..."is this it?". They're underwhelmed I guess. Is it supposed to get a lot worse here?

Per the NWS radar, Sandy is making a beeline for the coast - my guess (just a guess) that it might cross before sunset...

if it stays on it's current heading it might even pass south of PHL - some good news for NYC, perhaps...

Looks to be making a beeline for Atlantic City. I don't know what you're thinking but at this point the only good news is if Sandy makes landfall east of NYC, as OzonePete alluded to. Storm surge will be historic and hurricane force winds will still encompass NYC

You are quite right IntheEye. This is the worst case for the entire Jersey shore, NYC and southern Long Island. It's locked in now. Eye should come in somewhere from Atlantic City to Long Beach Island. We just had some really high gusts here in western Brooklyn. Good lord I can't imagine what it's going to be like a few hours from now.

for those in nj, don't trust the jcpl power outage maps. i know many people in my town out of power and those people are not listed as people out on the outage map. just assume more people are out then they say.

that's exactly what happened here during ISaac. The power company were not updating those lost due to the storm.

A LOT worse. It's going to get worse throughout the day into the evening and night.

I'm measuring a forward speed of 30-35 mph now, and the center is only 80 miles from the coast. At this speed, the center will be inland within 3 hrs, or near 4:30pm EDT, which is closer to low tide than high tide.
