ATL: SANDY - Remnants - Discussion

I'm not a meteorologist, neither can I claim myself a "professional" anything at this time. However, it seems to me that this storm will not be as damaging as feared...all the flooding I have seen so far has literally been right along the beach, the storm surge has inundated streets with a few feet of water about 4-5 blocks from the shore but I have yet to see devastating damage. Just my opinion here.

Sandy will officially still be a hurricane when it makes landfall. Because it's speeding up it will officially still be warm core at landfall. I bet the NHC didn't count on that. Landfall around Atlantic City as a 940 mb hurricane not extra-tropical.

Predicting landfall near or over Cape May, NJ...probably around 4 or 4:15 pm EDT.

Wow, so the models did really well right up until the end, I thought when i left this morning they were saying midnight, so an 8 hour difference in landfall right at the end of the forecast. Very very hard to forecast these systems.

Hopefully this prevents many of the doom-day scenarios - such as the flooding of NYC subways, as hopefully this faster motion will result in a lot less time for the water to be pushed ashore - and at a lower tide as it has been mentioned.

As far as I understand it, surge isn't instantaneous, and that's the concern.

there is a worst where sandy will make landfall in a couple hours and then will start to weaken how could it get any worse i live in southern new england RI and the winds are like a typical nor easter yea storm surge is bad but typical of a very strong blizzard/northeaster i bet winds in southern new england will die down quickly how can it get any worse ....just my thought

Low tide has passed at the Battery and it was no lower than the normally expected (full moon) high tide. Current surge 5 feet and climbing.

Some people seem a little more at ease because the center will not pass at high tide. Keep in mind that for Atlantic City, high tide is at 7 PM...so if this makes landfall at 6 PM, it is only an hour off. That isn't exactly a low-tide point.

Stop downplaying the storm, these posts do nothing but start an argument. There will be plenty of time once Sandy is gone to discuss how bad it was or wasn't.

the worse has been the back side of the center, from what we experienced. And it will still be carrying walls of water for hours.

Some people seem a little more at ease because the center will not pass at high tide. Keep in mind that for Atlantic City, high tide is at 7 PM...so if this makes landfall at 6 PM, it is only an hour off. That isn't exactly a low-tide point.

Also, onshore wind will continue for some hours after landfall for areas north of the landfall point.
