Central Dense Overcast. Solid convection surrounding the center, usually only occurs in hurricanes.

IF youre looking at a curved loop, then yes it looks NW. If you use a flat loop, like the SSD floater, its moving wnw. Its most certainly moving wnw at this time. Its gonna have to really turn to miss the Caribbean. If Jeff Masters was right in his blog this morning, it could turn north into the southestern US, but it looks more likely, this will be the GOM's problem in about a week

While I agree that -removed- and statecasting is annoying, not everybody is doing it. 8-) I flat out refuse to do it.

"CDO" is an acronym that stands for "central dense overcast". This is the cirrus cloud shield that results from the thunderstorms in the eyewall of a tropical cyclone and its rainbands. Before the tropical cyclone reaches hurricane strength (33 m/s, 64 kts, 74mph), typically the CDO is uniformly showing the cold cloud tops of the cirrus with no eye apparent. Once the storm reaches the hurricane strength threshold, usually an eye can be seen in either the infrared or visible channels of the satellites. Tropical cyclones that have nearly circular CDO's are indicative of favorable, low vertical shear environments.

CDO= Central Dense Overcast

In simple terms - that big ball of clouds that hangs out over the center of the storm :) (If I'm wrong, please correct :wink: )

"Sudden right turn" is something of an overstatement. It's been tracking more WNW for the last 6 hours. Generally, you need to see 12 hours or more of consistent motion to call it a new track.

Lines of the day: "....it will be a hurricane soon" or "...Dean is getting stronger".

If it is a real turn, you likely won't see a large track adjustment at 5PM. HOWEVER, they will mention it, and if it continues..it is possible to see a change later tonight or tomorrow morning.

LeeJet,
Ok....Ill bite.
First off, I really could care less about this coming to Texas...I don't want a major.

So, Mr. Miami, you believe its going NW huh? Well, ill make a wager. If this passes 50W north of 14N, you can call me a wishcaster. But, since it wont do that all that will happen with EVERYONE claiming this is moving NW is this: you all will look like fools. Its not heading NW, it never was, and it WONT for a while. What, do you think this will curve north of the island, catch a nice ridge, and Andrew it all the way to Miami?

I only look at whats occuring in real time....i leave *-removed-* to others. Try again buddy.

And mods, yes you can reprimand me for this post....sorry I just cant sit back and let somebody call me out.

I hope the Euro is on to something at 500 MB. It keeps it south with the high building back to the west along the Gulf Coast next week.

Storms in NC, you need to provide a better URL. I tried cutting and pasting that one, and it negated everything past your first forward slash and simply went to http://www.imageshack.com .

Enough guys...

Anyone read the 500 of the Euro? Has a big H over Texas next week, thus the west track in GOM.

Definite information over load. Something is just not right, this WNW movement now with the strong ridge aloft with an almost due west projected track across the Caribbean. I'll bet this extreme model flop is not over.
