Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
I'm thinking the next satellite pass for the tropical sectors are at 0145Z or 0200Z.
We need to all thank the hard working technicians and support staff. There are a lot of people behind the scenes who get no credit yet can be just as valuable in saving lives.

What exactly is that growing blob?
One nasty feederband that is going to flood the Dominican Republic nearly as bad as Haiti

I remember watching the ir overnight during ri. Matthew seemed like he would slurp off that tank and it would send him into overdrive. I'm scared to imagine when that feeder band starts feeding.... Then with the huge anticyclone and low shear, then with the heat content in the Bahamas... Can you imagine better ingredients?
One of the very first GFS models had this at 898mb south of Cuba.

Thank you for the anxiety-busting guffaw. I was starting to freak out a bit.
Maybe it needs more cowbell?
You're killing me. Seriously. I can't take it. Cowbell. TWICE. In one day.
Dear Mods: Is it okay to be briefly, albeit possibly annoyingly off-topic when we've got no updated info coming in? I just can't resist a cowbell reference, but I don't wanna be known as an habitual over-the-line-stepper either...

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
Ship traffic in the 50's and 60's was literally everywhere.
I used to "hand-plot" about a thousand weather stations and then "analyze" the weather by hand-drawing isobar lines, fronts, etc.
We got all of our weather data over the teletype which came via High Frequency radio that we tuned ourselves.
Any other old Pro Mets out there know what I'm talking about??

Although I have been a hurricane forecaster since 1980 that only means I've been wrong lots of times.
Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
If I was working for the NHC, I will be stating in the next advisory, that due to complex scenarios all around Matthew including certain items that are suppose to be around in the next 24 to 36 hours still haven't shown up, the guidance is very iffy and there could be major changes in the projected path so all people need to keep an eye on this system.
I still have no idea what will be happening with this system.

Seems like too much of a coincidence satellites go down with such an intense system that has stalled if you ask me...

There was a Coronal Hole that was ejecting solar storms toward the earth, but last I heard it was suppose to hit yesterday.

When was the last time this ever happened? Or has it ever happened? I sorta agree with you. But I have been reading a few conspiracy websites lately concerning other things lol Hopefully it'll be back up and operational soon. I'm sure they are working on it as fast as they can...

It went down for days during Mitch's peak (or sometime shortly after)--but I read there was a geomagnetic storm watch or something today, so that may have had something to do with interrupting the satellite signal today.

For me, a coming hurricane feels a lot like it feels just before an earthquake (I live in SE VA, but I'm Cali born). If you are attuned to it, you feel a sense of dread, the air seems heavy and still and all sounds seem a bit muffled. Crickets stop chirping, birds get nervous, dogs and cats get anxious (cats will often hide). Sometimes it even feels as though a shadow has crossed over the sun. But then I believe in extraterrestrial life and I'm superstitious about football and card games, so it could just be me...

Oh! I CAN ANSWER THIS!!!
When I was a little kid, I remember getting the storm's COORDINATES from the local "weatherman" once or twice a day during the newscast (which lasted THIRTY MINUTES TWICE A DAY!!!), and then you would go to a map....a grid, if you will....and PLOT the coordinates they said the storm was at. Your daily newspaper would also publish the COORDINATES on a little mini-grid, so you could see if it was approaching your city.
There was NO "radar image" to actually see it for yourself. You just plotted out the eye's coordinates and kept track of its general motion.
Well, this WAS the '50's and '60's, so it was pretty crude. But I LOVED doing it!
I think if I had it to do over, I might have gone to school and become a meteorologist myself.
A Cat 4 in the south Caribbean and they decide to throw the Way-Back time machine switch?
For you kids new to the tropics, your local newspaper (you get one of those don't you?) will print a 'Hurricane Tracking Map' at the beginning of the season. This will be cut (or torn) out of the paper and attached to the refrigerator door for the duration of the season. As Michele said, you need to take your pencils (not a pen so we can erase) and mark the storm location with the updates from the local radio or tv and it's typically a competition to see who gets it first. When the X's are pointing in your direction, you start to get concerned. When the breeze starts picking up, the shutters go up. When the barometer starts dropping like there's no tomorrow, you hold on tightly for the rough ride. In South Florida we always had the 'Early Warning System' of storm reports from the Bahama's / Cuba to give us a short advance warning.
So get out those tracking maps and start plotting.
