Based on recon this seems to be 998-999mb and 55-60 kt at the moment.

Recon fix is quite a bit SW of the forecast track.
Major implications for LI and NYC

Lightning encroaching to the center fix from the SW.
Could be a sign that stacking is improving.

Oh wow, that's stronger than I expected. Considering that the dropsonde probably didn't perfectly hit the highest winds area I think it's reasonable to argue that there is a section of Henri with 65 kt winds. Even though I of course won't blame NHC for keeping it at 60 kt if recon itself can't conclusively find evidence of 65+ kt winds.

A lot of times those dropsondes will measure a gust instead of the true sustained winds. That might be the case here.

Not a word about this in the NY Times online.

I feel like ABC, NBC, FOX, and CNN (you know, the major news organizations) won’t be covering this storm until tomorrow or so. Yeah, I do find it strange that there has not been much mention of this in major news

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.

Not many people follow the major news organizations these days, especially for tropical weather info. Social media is usually how people hear about storms. I used to live in Providence, RI and the people I know up there seem fully aware of it.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

Recon center fix looks west of the 5am NHC forecast, judging by the 8am advisory. This, along with the 6z model runs, could shift the 11am cone into Long Island and Connecticut. Just great.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Either we're screaming about too much coverage or not enough.

Henri seems to be tilted a bit. This is Henri seen from GEOS-16 using the Band 5 Snow/Ice, the low level clouds appear white and the higher level clouds appear grey. As you can see the lower white clouds are rotating around near the northern edge of the upper clouds.
