Good luck, Sanibel. I know that feeling all too well- finishing last minute checks, hoping for the best but in your gut you’re expecting “the one”. Keeping you in mind- hoping you have a safe and as painless an evacuation as possible.

I just zoom in on the NHC interactive cone and make sure to have "track" checked. Now showing landfall just north of Venice.

I just zoomed in on the track and saw Port Charlotte a little to the south. Getting pretty close to Charley-land.

My house is quite literally on that line. At least I'm inland about 15 miles. Ugh....I am not having fun.

The winds went down 10 knots and pressure went up 10-15 mb, but its structure hasn't suffered at all, actually improving since before Cuba. It's primed to recover very quickly over the next 12-24 hours.

Please replies from only those that truly are learned on this. Will a strong storm go more polewatd and be able to push back the trough to go firther North or will it go further east? The NHC mentioned this as complication in forecast but never said what direction it would go. Thanks

Ian weakened slightly, but it is still a Cat 3 and is already trying to intensify even after crossing Cuba. Cuba did very little to damage the storm unfortunately.

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.

He was intensifying fast enough that the island didn't immediately cut him off at the knees, but if Cuba wasn't there we'd likely be looking at a maxed cat 4 or even stronger right now, so it definitely had an impact, albeit a latent one.

Reminder to anyone considering staying: Even aside from Ian's considerable wind speeds, 30"+ inches of rain will cut off all access to your area. Multiple thoroughfares will be inundated for days or longer. Many neighborhoods will be entirely unreachable without a boat. Power will likely be out for an extended period of time. If you're considering staying, also consider that you might be isolated for a week or more with no access to clean water or extra supplies.

This is a lot different from say, Andrew, where he hit hard and fast but moved out and left most inland areas relatively dry. Wind damage can be awful but it's also a matter of clearing debris. There's no clearing trillions of gallons of gulf water - you just have to wait.

My biggest concern was always the surge.

It will kill you fast.

Hence being 50 feet above it in a parking garage.

Florida is in a panic right now. I can feel it and I’m in Northern Nevada. It absolutely sucks. Hundreds of cars around gas stations waiting for a tanker truck that may take days to get there.

Hundreds of thousands of people on grid-locked highways running out of gas, diapers, water, food and nowhere to go.

It can get ugly trust me.

Although I have been a hurricane forecaster since 1980 that only means I've been wrong lots of times.
