Re: ATL: SANDY - Post-Tropical - Discussion
Fox News showing some pretty intense flooding in Lower Manhattan. Looks like Mid-Town (Times Square) is ok and they just showed video of an apartment building with the whole facade collapsed. They are discussing how the salt water will corrode the underground power equipment and subways.

ozonepete wrote:Hey Hogweed and Dave. My apologies. Shouldn't have said completely wrong - not questioning VDMs, lol.I suspect the original smaller low pressure center that was Sandy's eye has started rotating around the new much large COC and thus there could be a lower pressure there. But the center is so large now and it is no longer tropical so I'm not sure they will find a true eye even if they find a small area of low pressure. they will have to sample from Maryland all the way to Long Island to get the full curvature of the windfield.
No problem Ozonepete! I logged out for a little while to take a break from it all and just saw your post. All's good here....now if I can see I'll be doing even better.

Storm chaser Johnny Kelly also tweets that there are numerous calls in NYC for water rescues.
EDIT: @twc_hurricane: "BREAKING: FDNY headquarters on Grand St. being evacuated by boat. #Sandy."
There are tweets saying that Coney Island flooded and people didn't evacuate their basement apts.
Oh I remember seeing either on twc or cnn earlier this afternoon...they interviewed an official from coney island...he said they would be fine and weren't going anywhere.

Update fr NYC: We are about a breath or two from Chaos. Power flickering on UES, Manhattan. Wind gust on Triboro Bridge of 100mph. West Side Highway, FDR Drive flooded. South Street Seaport flooded, power out downtown. Flooding on East 14th and B/C is pushing into zone "B". Wind is howling at hurricane gusts or better. Windows are bowing on 9th floor of highrise here. May be my last check-in as I am doubting that the power will hold up. Wish us luck!!! Battery may be the least of our problems as East River is overtopping before Hudson.
----
Also Wunderground commenters are posting links to Twitter feeds saying MTA officials have confirmed that there is flooding in all subway lines.
----
I'm trying to find confirmation of that. It is not yet on the MTA Twitter feed. BUT the MTA Official Twitter feed does include news of flooding of Brooklyn Battery Tunnel.

I think we all need to pause and pray or hope that there are no more deaths. This is just unreal to watch it unfold.

That seems to be an old and spurious report from 11+ hours ago:
Link
Edit: Confirmation has just come from: http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=weather&id=8860158. “Eyewitness News reporter Kemberly Richardson reports water is pouring over the seawall in Lower Manhattan, flooding South Street, while reports of downed trees and power lines are multiplying by the minute. Sandy came ashore in South Jersey shortly after 6:00 p.m., but the surge behind it is causing massive flooding along the Jersey Shore.”

Looks ~150K ish... I may be missing some...are there multiple major power companies in NJ?
Yes. Down in Southern NJ there's Atlantic Electric and PSE&G. I forget the names of the ones in central and northern NJ.
I thought I saw on FB or our STORM2K.org FB page or maybe here on the site earlier that NJ already had over 900k w/o power.

We really appreciate the extra work to provide sources!
So much false info gets spread around when a storm hits, we don't want to facilitate the false rumor machine.
