SE TX/SW LA weather: Much cooler and WET after Tuesday

Active weather period on tap through Monday with several rounds of thunderstorms expected.



Developing NW flow aloft above moist and unstable SE flow at the surface is resulting in an unstable air mass. Add in weak upper air impulses every 6-10 hours and rounds of thunderstorms will be the result. First round went across the N and W parts of the area yesterday afternoon with this morning’s round along and E of I-45. Radar out of HOU and DFW shows a long band of thunderstorms extending NW from CLL to Waco to NW of Fort Worth moving slowly SSE. Air mass across the central and eastern sections of the region has likely been temporarily stabilized from the morning convection where areas to the west are untapped at the moment. Expect to see a general decreasing trend in activity this morning followed by a slight upswing later this afternoon after modest daytime heating. Areas that heat more under more broken skies will have the better chances of storms this afternoon. Soundings are not as favorable today for the downburst wind threat noted yesterday as the lower levels have moistened and afternoon highs will be about 5 degrees cooler.



Wet pattern will be maintained through Monday as upper trough hangs out just to the NE of the region with NW flow aloft above SE low level flow. Expect periodic rounds of thunderstorms at any time through Monday with the most likely timing being in the afternoon and evening following peak heating.



Air mass begins to dry on Tuesday as trough pushes east of the area. We should return toward more typical late summer weather with a slight chance of seabreeze storms each afternoon. Upper air pattern appears to transition toward more fall like conditions just beyond day 7.

NHC discontinued advsiories yesterday evening. The remains of the system are located south of Puerto Rico and are drifting westward. There are no significant signs of regeneration and upper level winds remain hostile.

NWS dropped the rain chances for today due to stable air and clouds, etc.

However, looking at Sat loops, the low clouds are finally burning off with just some cirrus skirting by. If we can get some decent sun I think there still a good shot of storms reforming this afternoon.

Guess I better get my new rain gauge set up today!! Yard is asking for the rain, but the temps have sure been nice compared to most of the summer!!

edit on thurs.- Ok, I have found out just how dry we are here. I am now down 14" and not even a hint of moisture in the soil!! I knew it was dry, but geez!! For a fat, old man like me this will have to be a 2 day project. If we get rain moving in I still have a place I can set out the new gauge.

Further edit. I set out the gauge for the severe storms moving our way and only ended up with 0.06". Maybe I can get this gauge set up properly tomorrow before it rains again, if it rains again. As Jason said, those storms were just flat acting WEIRD!!

My new rain gauge is now properly set up and ready for some rain. COME ON RAIN!!! Not looking very promising out there right now. A few puffy clouds around, but nothing that gives me much hope. Radar does show a good sea breeze front developing, but I don't think it will make it up here.

Always, just noticed more to the East is developing. Today it appears more of the moisture is moving in from the South than the West.

I had the usual dark clouds, wind and smell of rain..The rain formed just a few miles to the west..I think I need to pipe the water from Target as it always rains there! Does not look to promising unless the storms fire up into the late evening hours like yesterday around Austin.

I was in Austin from about noon - 6pm and the weather behaved beautifully. It was very HOT, but thankfully, no rain on us. I know they need badly, but I know at least part of Austin got a good bit of rain Friday night and hopefully they got more after we left. We hit some rain around Columbus or just past there on the way home and it lasted until nearly the other side of Houston. Some moderate, some light, and an amazing lightning show.

No visible signs of rain at my house and I didn't see a radar all day, so no clue how active it was in the area. Hopefully, I'll get some tomorrow.

I'm way past tired... an exhausting day that started at 4:45am this morning (Sat. morn.) after very little sleep!

LOL. We were drenched, from sweat. There was nothing "cool" about it. I guess it wouldn't have been so bad if you were just walking to and from places, sitting outside, or stuff like that, but we were kinda active, and around a lot of people, for many hours. It was quite toasty!! But that's ok... it was worth it.

I feel guilty posting this. We got a good old fashioned Texas thunderstorm this afternoon here at the abode. Ended up with 0.95" in the new rain gauge. It finally got some good use.
