Looking at the latest temps in Palm Beach County Florida, temps are several degrees warmer than the forecasted Highs by as much at 5F degrees already. I wonder if the next discussion will take this into account and raise the projected overnight lows a few degrees? It's hard to believe Palm Beach County will go from upper 60s to to the mid 20s to mid 30s tonight especially since the sun's angle is quite a bit stronger (higher) than in January and the duration of daytime heating lasts longer.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Hard Freeze watch is removed for inland Palm Beach County to be inline with Broward and Miami-Dade.

winds not forecast to drop off completely will probably prevent temps from dropping as much as they could given the airmass...

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MIAMI FL
201 PM EST WED FEB 4 2009

.DISCUSSION...STRONG COLD FRONT LOCATED AT 18Z FROM A MARCO ISLAND
TO A FORT LAUDERDALE LINE. DEWPOINTS DROP OFF STEADILY AS ONE GOES
NORTH BUT THE TEMPERATURES DON`T GET INTO THE 50S UNTIL YOU REACH
CENTRAL FLORIDA. DEWPOINTS IN THE SINGLE DIGITS ARE SEEN ALL OVER
THE SOUTHEAST INCLUDING NORTH FLORIDA. OUR DEWPOINTS MAY ONLY GET
TO ABOUT 20 DEGREES WHICH IS STILL FAIRLY DRY FOR SOUTH FLORIDA.
NNW WINDS WILL INCREASE BEHIND THE FRONT TO AT LEAST BREEZY
CONDITIONS. SINCE THE GRADIENT WILL REMAIN TIGHT OVERNIGHT, THE
WINDS INLAND WILL NOT DIE DOWN BELOW 6 OR 7 MPH
SO A WIND CHILL
WARNING WENT INTO EFFECT OVERNIGHT FOR EVERYWHERE EXCEPT THE
SOUTHEAST METRO AND CSTL AREAS. FOR THESE AREAS, HAVE ISSUED A
WIND CHILL ADVISORY. LEFT THE HARD FREEZE AND FREEZE WARNINGS AS
THEY WERE BUT DID RAISE THE MIN`S A TAD OVER THE NORTHWEST DUE TO
MIXING
. HAVE ALSO ISSUED A FREEZE WATCH FOR GLADES, HENDRY AND
INLAND COLLIER FOR THURSDAY NIGHT/FRIDAY MORNING FOR TEMPERATURES
NEAR OR JUST BELOW FREEZING.

BY THIS WEEKEND THE TEMPERATURES WILL MODIFY GREATLY BACK
TO NEAR NORMAL AS THE ARCTIC HIGH STARTS PUSHING EAST OF SOUTH
GEORGIA FRIDAY NIGHT. THIS WILL ESTABLISH EASTERLY FLOW ONCE AGAIN.

Currently 41F, Wind Chill of 32F.

Tonight will have wind chills in the single digits.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE JACKSONVILLE FL
235 PM EST WED FEB 4 2009

...ARCTIC AIRMASS IN CONTROL THROUGH FRIDAY...

.CURRENTLY...CLEAR SKIES BUT UNSEASONABLE COLD TEMPERATURES TODAY,
CURRENT TEMPS ARE IN THE UPPER 30S AND LOWER 40S MAKING THIS THE
COLDEST TEMPERATURES IN JUST OVER A YEAR WHEN IN JAN 2008 TEMPS
ONLY MANAGED THE LOWER 40S IN NE FL. WIND CHILLS ARE IN THE MID
20S TO THE LOWER 30S AS WINDS ARE UP AROUND 15-20 MPH WITH FEWER
GUSTS NOW AROUND 30 MPH
.

.SHORT TERM...TONIGHT...VERY COLD NIGHT WITH HARD FREEZE IN PLACE
OVER ENTIRE AREA. FREEZE DURATION EXPECTED TO LAST ABOUT 9 TO
NEARLY 15 HOURS.
GIVEN THE COLD AIRMASS AND MOS WINDS BEING
SLIGHTLY HIGHER THAN FORECAST...WILL ONLY PUT A PORTION OF OUR
ERN ZONES IN A WIND CHILL ADVISORY AND HAVE IT START THIS EVENING
AT 7 PM AND CONTINUE INTO THU MORNING TIL 9 OR 10 AM. LOWS FROM
MAV GUIDANCE MAY BE A BIT LOW CONSIDERING THE LAST COLD SNAP WHERE
IT WAS ABOUT 3-5 DEG TOO COLD 12-24 HRS BEFORE THE EVENT. SO TOOK
A BLEND OF MET AND MAV AND HAVE MID TEENS INLAND AREAS TO THE LOWER
20S NEAR THE COAST
. RECORD LOWS POSSIBLE NEXT COUPLE OF
NIGHTS
...SEE CLIMATE SECTION BELOW.

THU-SAT...STRONG AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE AT 1038 MB WILL MOVE OVER
THE FORECAST AREA THU AND FRI AND OFFSHORE BY SAT. MID AND UPPER
LEVEL TROUGH WILL BEGIN TO LIFT OUT LATE THU WITH RIDGE ALOFT
BUILDING IN FRI AND SAT. THIS WILL GRADUALLY RESULT IN MODERATING
TEMPS BUT STILL VERY DRY WITH COLD DAYS/NIGHTS AND MORNING
FROST. BETTER FROST NIGHT WOULD BE FRI NIGHT AS INFLUENCE FROM
ATLC AND GULF OF MEXICO MOISTURE ALLOWS DEWPOINTS TO RISE WELL
INTO THE 20S. COLD NIGHT FOR THU NIGHT AND ANTICIPATE A HARD
FREEZE OVER MUCH OF THE AREA AGAIN. MAV GUIDANCE AGAIN LOOKS TOO
COLD SO USED A BLEND OF MAV AND MET. FREEZE POSSIBLE ONCE AGAIN
OVER INLAND NE FL FRI NIGHT UNDER NEAR CALM WINDS.

.LONG TERM...SUN-WED.
MID AND UPPER LEVEL RIDGE DOMINATES THE FORECAST AREA SUN THROUGH
TUE AND BEGINNING TO SHIFT EWD WED AS MID LEVEL TROUGH PUSHES INTO
THE CENTRAL CONUS FROM WRN U.S. A COLD FRONT IS PROGGED TO MOVE
INTO LOWER MS VALLEY LATE WED. DRY AIRMASS CONTS WITH NO PRECIP
TO MENTION ATTM. GIVEN SE-S FLOW WARMER AIRMASS EXPECTED WITH TEMPS
IN THE 70S MOST AREAS FOR NEXT WEEK.

As a fellow Floridian, I can empathize with calling a wind chill of 44F brutal...to the rest of the nation, i am envisioning them giving us a collective 'rolling of the eyes' and calling us a tad dramatic. If you can hold on for about 48 hours, the temperature forecast will be much more agreeable in tampa.

Actually really pleasant here in Fort Lauderdale...esp in the direct sun...temp close to 70F (69F as of 3pm at airport).

Pretty cool out, 52 with a windchill around 47. Rather enjoyable. Hopefully we can make it to the 20's tonight.

Tampa Downtown forecasted to drop to 27*F according
to the point forecast- coldest since January 24, 2003 and
before that 1996.

Probably the last of the really cold weather. Hopefully not. I like it because soon it will be 90 everyday. Speaking of 90 everyday. Is there any correlation between a cooler then normal winter and Hurricane season. Since they are relating this cold snap period to records of 96 and 58. I'm wondering.

First I guess it depends on how a winter is determined as above or below normal. If you look at the numbers, so far this winter has been slightly above normal, for example, in Miami....

Dec-08 Avg temp 71.7 (+1.8 deg above normal)
Jan-09 Avg temp 67.5 (-0.6 deg below normal)

Taken together, the 2-month period of winter (not counting what will be in February overall) is averaging slightly above normal.

You raise an interesting question for sure, and I would add to it, is there any correlation between a strong cold event (freeze for most of state) during a winter season, even if the overall winter averages normal to even above normal, and the following hurricane season?

On a side note, the GFS 16-day doesn't show a temp below 60 deg (day or night) in Miami after this saturday morning.

47*F at the official downtown saint pete albert whitted airport station
wind chill of 41*F, officially, right now...which puts the afternoon
feel-like temperature 30 degrees below the average of 70*F at this
time of day....Tampa drops to 27*F on the point forecast- now that is once every
6 years...

Its 46 out there now, with a wind chill of 39. The wind is really bad. Its quite enjoyable when the wind isnt blowing. Going to be a cold night. I wouldnt doubt that WC's dip into the teens.

The wind will make the wind chill very low....but may prevent an ideal set-up for radiational cooling, keeping actual temps a bit above what they may have otherwise fallen to with calm winds.
