Re: Florida Weather Thread: Arctic air
With no freeze warning for metro Broward (east of Sawgrass) and metro-Miami-Dade....urban hubs of Fort Lauderdale and Miami not expected to drop below freezing. NWS Miami forecast mid to high 30's in these areas. Comparable to (or a degree or 2 colder) than the 1/3/08 cold snap which brought high 30's to official reporting stations in Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
Per NWS Miami
A FREEZE WARNING (IS) IN EFFECT FOR
THE REST OF SOUTH FLORIDA, EXCEPT FOR COASTAL BROWARD
COUNTY...COASTAL MIAMI-DADE COUNTY...AND METRO MIAMI-DADE COUNTY.
FOR BROWARD COUNTY, FREEZING TEMPERATURES WILL BE CONFINED TO WEST OF THE
SAWGRASS EXPRESSWAY.
update: 9pm temp at Fort Lauderdale (airport) down 2 deg from 8pm to 54F and Miami Intern'l Airport down 4 deg from 8pm to 54F. Wind chill in Fort Lauderdale of 49 deg!!!

Re: Florida Weather Thread: Arctic air
Temp at Miami (airport) down to 52 deg at 10pm. Interestingly enough, dewpt is up 5 deg from previous hour (33 deg at 10pm, up form 28 deg at 9pm).

Of note, dewpts across metro Broward and Miami-Dade jumped up from 9pm to 10pm....unexpected???
Pompano Beach....dewpt at 9pm=21 deg, dewpt at 10pm=27deg
Fort Lauderdale Exec Airport...dewpt at 9pm=18 deg, dewpt at 10pm = 21 deg
Opa Locka...dewpt at 9pm=21 deg, dewpt at 10pm=27deg
Miami International....dewpt at 9pm = 28 deg, dewpt at 10pm = 33 deg

Re:
Wow...you take the prize for highest dewpt compared to major reporting stations at 10pm.....has this been increasing in the last hour or 2 like most other locations in the area? Be interesting to see if this is a blip or a trend....but not going to see below freezing anywhere that has a dewpt above 32 deg!!!

Re: Florida Weather Thread: Arctic air
It's interesting to note that temps along the SE counties of Florida are not falling quite as fast as I would think.
I'm only seeing 4-6 degree drops since sundown. Dewpoints remain quite low though with 18F at PBI and 21F at FLL (exec).
For example, here is PBI:
04 21:53 NW 13 10.00 Fair CLR 47 18 30.39 1029.0
04 20:53 NW 10 10.00 Fair CLR 48 22 30.36 1028.1
04 19:53 NW 8 10.00 Fair CLR 49 21 30.33 1027.0
04 18:53 NW 10 10.00 Fair CLR 53 22 66 53 30.31 1026.2
If you extrapolate this rate out, it would not hit freezing at PBI or FLL. Unless the temps really start diving here, I would not expect freezing in most of Palm Beach, Broward, or Miami-Dade.
I believe the fact the winds are staying up in Southern Florida is allowing the atmosphere to "mix" out some of the most severe cold.

Re: Florida Weather Thread: Arctic air
Dewpt up 5 deg in last 90 minutes (9:30pm to 11pm) by me in east Broward..temp approaching 50F....i would estimate a low in the 37-41 deg range at the current rate of temp drop in fort lauderdale (actually being a bit generous with rate of drop).

High-Low Radio Shack wire thermoster thermometer low temperature Sanibel : 37.6*
Current Sun side of house in shade 50*
Shade side of house 43*
Coldest I've seen for day temperature. Not coldest I've seen for low however.
Strange dry crisp northern air reminds me of up north. As always, warm semi-tropical sun. 33% humidity.

Re: Florida Weather Thread: Arctic air
Lows last night ended up a bit warmer than forecast....1-2 deg that is...so all in all, NWS Miami got it right. Beat 1/3/08 cold snap by 1 degree in Miami and 2 degrees in Fort Lauderdale (1/3/08 - both cities officially hit 39F).
Lows last night (from NWS Miami):
West Palm 33 (forecast was 32)
Fort Lauderdale 37 (forecast was 35)
Miami 38 (forecast was 37)
Naples 35 (forecast was 33)
No more 30's tonight...forecast lows will bottom out in the 45-50 range in metro Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Warm-weather enthusiasts take heart in the latest NWS Miami Discussion:
FRIDAY AND THROUGH THE WEEKEND...TEMPERATURES WILL STEADILY WARM
AS THE DEEP TROUGH PULLS AWAY FROM THE AREA AND THE SFC HIGH MOVES
INTO THE ATLANTIC. DRY WEATHER WILL CONTINUE. NEXT WEEK WILL LEAD
TO A BUILDING RIDGE ACROSS THE AREA WITH WARMTH AND HUMIDITY ON
THE INCREASE...QUITE A CHANGE FROM WHAT WE HAVE NOW. GFS SHOWS A
COLD FRONT MOVING ACROSS THE AREA LATE THU...BUT ECMWF STALLS IT
NORTH OF THE LAKE WITH MORE RIDGING DOMINATING. EITHER WAY...THE
FRONT LATE NEXT WEEK LOOKS INSIGNIFICANT. THERE COULD BE A FEW
SHOWERS EAST COAST BY NEXT WEEK...BUT DECIDED TO AVOID SLIGHT CHC
OF SHOWER MENTION EVERY PERIOD IN THE EXTENDED AS THE MAIN THEME
IS DRY WEATHER. SHOWER MENTION CAN BE ADDED IN LATER AS TIME GETS
CLOSER AND THERE IS BETTER CONFIDENCE ON TIMING OF ANY RAINFALL.
