Years and years...

#41 Postby azskyman » Thu Mar 13, 2003 11:25 pm

Ah, yes...

The most fascinating things about being 56...

1) my 40 or so employees at the plant all look at me as though I really know something! And, for the first time in my life, they actually listen to me occasionally!

2) my AARP card discounts far outweigh the cost of membership!!!!

3) here in Arizona where I am surrounded by many many retirees, I'm looked upon as "the young kid up the street!"

4) my sons don't ask me for the car keys any more. (But I enjoy asking them for theirs to drive their G35 or RAM 1500!)

5) I finally don't get carded any more.

6) When I hold my wife's purse in the airport while she goes to the ladies room, I no longer get a second look by the security guards.

7) my longterm memory is getting sharper so I can remember weather events from my early years...but don't remember what day it is today.

8) My boss no longer has a big stick to hit me with....if I ever find myself not enjoying work, I can just politely tell them to kiss my weathered a** and walk out the door to become a greeter at WalMart or a crossing guard just down the street.

9) As a Vietnam vet, I can and I do appreciate all the emotions that our young troops are now going through...and I will stand up and salute every last one of them for defending this country.

10) The people who work for me mean so much...and I can now enjoy more than ever watching them grow and change and learn along the way.

I wouldn't trade this point in my life, in spite of its challenges and occasional disappointments.

In contrast to Steve's post, I find that...

* My better days are well behind me;

* All I live for now is to see my son grow up and "launch" into his own;

* As to any "future"? Just more and more days of pain, isolation and neglect until He finally decides it's time for me to come "home".

I will be 26 on July 17th, in 125 days. You would think I was in my late teens.

Bill...your value to those who know you is not measured in years, but in smiles and hands over hands gripped in appreciation.

I see your struggles...I can feel them too. The good days for all of us are measured against the times we must grit our teeth and look for something to hang on to.

Do not ever, my friend, believe for a moment that the best, that the most on your horizon is limited to the journey of your son.

Your presence is always felt. Your words, though sometimes traversing your anguished heart, are not only appreciated but needed.

We need the steadfast hand of Captain Midnight and his faithful poogly pup, Annabelle. Hang in there, friend.

Springtime will be a time of renewal for you...you just wait and see!

with so varied age ranges can all get along so well! I love it!

Soldier, btw - all of us knuckleheads think the world of you! :wink:

Just realized I never checked in here (did on the other age topic going around)! 47 here. Hate being 47 actually, terrible number. That big 50 seems to be staring me in the face lately. When you're 45,for example, 50 seems so far off, now 48 isn't far off!!! Time is marching by too fast!

Oh well, I do feel 35 in my heart and I've been told I don't even look 40! Maybe b/c I cover the gray? he he

Breeze, had to smile at your comment about so many different ages here. Just to make it very clear about my age, what I remember: 1. the Beatles on Ed Sullivan (and my Scottish born mom declaring "this band will be huge someday"), JFK/MLK/RFK's Assassinations, landing on the moon (the world stopped for that, everyone watched it), the VietNam war, gas being cheap, glass milk and soda pop bottles, popsicle trucks (similar to ice cream trucks), etc. There's more but can't think of them right now! :)

Steve, laughed at your age comments too! Especially liked the one where you don't get odd looks now holding Kathy's purse. LOL

Bill, I know you have many daily struggles that most of us cannot relate to. But we value your friendship and are here for you, anytime and all the time. Hang in there dear friend........ you have my permission to rant and rave anytime when you feel frustrated. Wish you felt better too.
