Storm-wishing plagued weather enthusiasts--- but this is a naive obsession that
went away when Katrina hit
Storm-wishing Obsession when taken too far can be like a suicidal mania.
The storm-wishers put themselves in danger hoping for the worst...but knowing that the
result will be both physically and emotionally devastating.
One of the best lessons to teach a storm-wisher is to put that person in the
middle of a monster storm...the fear, regret, and trauma of the event will
eliminate any wishing---> or simply show them the damage done by storms

It IS amazing to look back, and then even more amazing to consider what was to come only a week after SP posted this. I went back and found one that I had posted in a very similar way - but two weeks pre-katrina.

Obviously, things quickly changed in a very big way - and we're still right in the middle of it all here in Biloxi... It's hard to belive that August '06 is only 7 months away!!

My point with "bumping" this topic back up is to stress the important of vigilance. My intention was never to “wish” for more storms, but to stress that it is not the time to let our guard down. I wish I had a tally of the numbers of posts here on Storm2k that mentioned “season cancel” or something with that effect. When I transmitted the post that evening of August 19th, a little over a week away from the greatest natural catastrophe to strike the United States, I saw people discounting the forecasts and the statistics showing the strong probability of a landfall. Even during the very accurate forecasts being disseminated by the National Hurricane Center, people continued to disregard the warning, saying that “it won’t strike here.” My intention is to bring attention to tropical cyclones. We can increase the funding to the National Hurricane Center all we want, but no forecast will give the proper warning needed when the recipient of said warning will not accept it. Unfortunately, in the Atlantic Basin since the dramatic increase in activity began in 1995, we have seen nearly 16,000 people die. Additionally, in the United States alone, there has been nearly 200 billion USD in damage. We need to focus our attention on education—at risk management in regards to threatening our lives by surfing during a hurricane or limiting construction along coastal regions.
