I used to think the hype of the south florida news over every tropical system was overdone but I think upon reflection of the lack of information the people in la seemed to have I will take the hype every time. As someone here already mentioned not eveyone has internet access or even watches the local news so too much information is now fine by me.

Monroe county has a tourist evacuation for 7 mile bridge and south. Upper keys will boot the tourists this evening.

Yea it is sad I saw the same exact thing. I happened to be at my local home depot buying portable ac for post storm and people were literally trying to hold on to their sheets of plywood in the parking lot the late in the afternoon before the storm.

11:15 Update Channel 10 Claims that with the upper Low over Cuba pushing South could force the Storm more North into Dade County and that Watches will be up for mainland S Florida by the 5pm update. She also claims that the center of the storm can reform more North through out the day giving S Florida a possible Cat 1 Hurricane late Monday/Tuesday.....don't kill the messenger

Much better to be overly updated and informed. Than to have those mets in New Orleans. I can't believe they are so clueless. You would think they would be all over the tropics after Katrina. Sad.

What are you talking about? I watched the news feeds online direct from New Orleans starting the Friday before the storm and the mets there were completely on top of it and urging everyone to leave. There was no minimizing of this storm there.

I think a few people are missing the point here. There's a discernable difference between informing and hyping. Nobody is saying informing isn't a good idea. But the more hype that's given, the less people pay attention next time there's a storm. I don't have any problem with informing, however local mets tend to overly hype every cloud puff as another poster said earlier. This is not helping anything.

There's a big difference between being anti-hype and anti-information. Don't confuse the two.

Excellent points, inotherwords. On the other hand, because it's the weekend and the local news has not been saying much about this storm (we are in the cone), very few people that I talked to in the grocery store were even aware of TD18. I'm not saying we are in danger but this is an area of the country that is filled with the elderly and infirm and possible power outages would affect them more so than the average population. They should be made aware and make the appropriate preparations since it will take them longer.

Today, football trumps weather (I love football but I haven't seen a banner or any interruptions locally).

I know this is only a TD at this point and I also know I am "preaching to the choir" since you aren't too far north of here and know the demographics. Hopefully, it will stay south and go into an unpopulated area in Mexico but only time will tell.

Bryan Norcross seems to think that it will go further north, based on what he said.

I did see an increase of people in the stores, but it wasn't frantic. But some do seem to be aware of the potential for a hurricane.

they don't upgrade watches/warnings at 8 pm, so that doesn't make sense. Furthermore, upgrading a just issued TS watch to a hurricane watch just 3 hours later makes even less sense.

The TS watch will stand for at least during the night, IMO, and be re-evaluated tomorrow morning, unless there is a drastic change in the track/intensity tonight.

If I remember correctly (I'm sure you will all let me know that I am wrong) but didn't they upgrade during the intermedite adv. with Katrina?
