SouthernG,
Did you happen to catch this???

Apparently they are air vacing people. ALso heard Mike Bettes on TWC talking about the C130's in Port Authur area......
""If you are unable to get to the airport call one of the following numbers. In Port Arthur 983-8612, in Mid-County 723-1531, in Beaumont 880-3905, in Orange 882-7070. Griffith said the flights would continue overnight Thursday into Friday.""
It might be worth a shot........
Evac'd a little north - not far enough!

I heard something about it on TV, but caught the end of it. I called...they're not coming to Jasper to bring people back to Jefferson County.
I just talked to a guy in another room. A lady went out to smoke about 4am and couldn't get back in her room because her key card was dead. They have to recharge them when that happens and they're not here! He had to take off the plywood on her window and break into her room.

GAHHH if someone has tape I would recoomend taping over the little hole in to door frame. Has anyone thought the keycard locks won't work if the power goes out?
Edit: If these run on power? Do they run on power? Heck either way I think I would cover up that hole in the door frame.. most hotel rooms have a manual lock for use when your inside the room

I know... I don't get it. I think that's why so many people are stuck on the roads. They are evacuating when they don't need to. You can hide from the wind.
Are there any trees near the hotel??? Creeks or Rivers??

Geez... the things we don't think about. Now you're stuck leaving the door ajar when nobody is in the room.
I don't know the topography of the area you're in, but from what I've read so far, it sounds like you're better off staying where you are. I probably would.
All the best to you and your family. My thoughts are with you. :-\

There are trees everywhere - this is the Big Thicket area. Yes, trees around the motel. Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend are north of here and from what I hear, creeks galore. I hope the winds aren't too high up here...I do worry about tornadoes. Anyone know the risk of tornadoes with Rita?
Would you believe I forgot my weather alert.?
I dib bring a TV/radio/flashlight/lantern combo thingy that has a weatherband radio though. But that takes 10 D batteries and my weather alert takes on 9 volt. stupid stupid stupid
Pebbles...I don't know if they're ran on electricity or battery. I know they have to charge the keycards, but not sure about the locks.

curtadams wrote:The authorities have lost their minds. Jasper is 80 miles inland and not on a river. Mandatory evac is INSANE! You picked a perfectly acceptable place (as would be expected for a storm2k maven) I'm sure you know more than I do on storm safety so no particular advice there. You made a good decision on where to go and what to take; it's not your fault the authorities are crazy. Get some water stored up; you'll live although you may be really miserable for a while. Maybe some evacuating residents will give you food out of the fridge? It won't last but it'll be useful today and extend your supplies.

I thought they were crazy at the time too. Looks like they weren't.
Now I know why...
