Texas Winter 2012-2013

Now wait a minute ... I just knew at some point I would be misquoted ... what I said was winter was over in Texas for areas along and south of the 31 degree north latitude line (Temple/Belton to College Station area, et al). That would mean winter over for Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Del Rio, etc.

However, I'll admit that my proclamation from last week appears to be in some danger. Next week's storm looks like a real doozie.

The coldest/wettest part of this Texas winter was in late December, not in the next two weeks. Back then the high in the Dallas area was at freezing with a low in the low 20s, along with snow. Nothing like that in the coming weeks. There will be more cold fronts in the coming months, but nothing near as cold as it was in January. Southern storm track remains active for the next few weeks, but the general flow pattern is changing so as to keep the cold air up in Canada (zonal flow across Canada).

I find myself in the unusual and somewhat disconcerting position of fully agreeing with wxman57. Sorry lads. But I admire your spunk and I hope I'm very wrong and y'all are right. And I'm hereby publicly giving you the right to give me tons of grief if it ends up that I gave up too soon.

As said earlier in this thread, the models do VERY well when blocking signatures take shape. I remember for Sandy, the models were extremely accurate even 5 or 6 days out.

Hey Portastorm, how far south does the storm next week show winter precip? If any.

Based on what we see on the GFS and some suggestions from the Euro and Canadian ensemble runs, it is not out of the question that wintry precip could occur as far south as my area over into east Texas. You Metroplexers appear to have even a better shot. You need to see just how far south that low center is pushed. Looks like the farthest south of any storm we have seen this winter season.

Yup, nothing but a few reports of sleet in the Red River Valley this morning. Otherwise, the perfect day for a Heat Miser bike ride: 37 degrees and light to moderate rain here in Denison.

Just two or three counties to my north however, much different. A couple of inches of snow in the Ada, Okla. area and some school closings.

How much snow are you getting there in Dallas? I said I didn't think you'd see another snow event in Dallas. I remember back in January I predicted that the lowest we'd see in Houston (at IAH) in February would be 34 degrees on Feb. 10th. IAH hit 34F on Feb. 14th and that's the coldest it'll likely see this month.

Time to warm things up around here!
