I'm concerned Irma seems to keep hugging that 17 latitude line. Can someone tell me how this compares to forecast points? Really hoping she'll pull north so as to miss Barbuda & Anguilla which right now look to be in line for direct hits.

She seems to be on target with NHC's forecast points.

It's already going wnw. It is gaining latitude and dead on forecast points. Next three days pretty much set in stone.

I'll guess for the next recon pass that they will find that this has strengthen to 160 knots and 922mb.

It's in the central Atlantic so it's not surprising the pressure is high relative to the winds.

But Hugo, Isabel, Gloria, Igor all had lower pressures and lower wind speeds. How is the Central Atlantic different from the Caribbean or the GOM?

If you go to tropicaltidbits.com there is a tab on the top of the page for aircraft recon. Select the tab and it'll display current and recent missions. It updates every 10 minutes when they are in the air.

As for Irma being dangerous for them to fly into, yes, it is. Flying into a tropical cyclone always has a certain amount of risk, but you have to remember, they are pros. They flew into Patricia when it was setting recon records. They turn back if things get too bad. They left Felix back in 2007 for one of the flights because it was too much.

Yeah, if I lived there I would seriously consider getting a one-way ticket out asap.

Absolutely astounding! This is our Haiyan folks, looks like the super cyclones have arrived in the Atlantic. I was wondering when we would see the recent trend of super storms come to t he Atlantic. 2013 had Haiyan in the WPAC, then 2015-16 featured Patricia in t he EPAC and monsters in the South Pacific. Now it is the Atlantic's turn, and what a Monster this storm has become.

Feels like I'm witnessing what the 1780 great hurricane may have looked like. Nothing like it in this part of the ATL in the last century. :double:

Florida is so cautious with evac orders because people would be better off in their homes than stuck on the highway. I'm on the coast and most of the Florida natives are doubtful it's even coming near us ....

exactly what is the pressure now? Is it still 926? I don't see any updates on the recon data or discussion threads.

It's in a higher pressure enviornment so I've heard.

On my Facebook page (I am studying meteorology right now) I wrote up a post on the synoptic pattern and all the possibilities. Needless to say, it is a complicated map and I tried my best to analyze it all.
